Irrigation Technician

This non-exempt position performs a variety of skilled tasks involving the installation, troubleshooting, and repair of irrigation systems (e.g., valves, controllers, mainlines, laterals); performs related work as required. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS The examples of functions listed in this job description are representative, but not necessarily exhaustive, of any one position in this job classification. Management may assign other functions not listed herein at its sole discretion. Accurately estimates and performs all irrigation repairs, and programs all irrigation clocks; trains employees and Irrigation Technicians; repairs domestic lines; completes irrigation renovation work and associated laborers profitably and on budget; locates and repairs breaks in main lines up to 2-1/2” in diameter; performs water management practices by keeping water usage under budget; diagnoses problems associated with pressure or design related issues; programs, replaces, and wires valves correctly; installs timers; performs sprinkler retrofits; diagnoses and repairs electrical and hydraulic controllers, and remote-control valves; installs irrigation controllers, remote control valves, mainline line pipe, lateral line pipe, sprinkler heads, moisture sensors and other related devices associated with an irrigation system; purchases materials and tools necessary for completion of irrigation tasks within budget and authority limitations; demonstrates maximum safety procedures in the operation of vehicles, equipment, and tools; demonstrates basic knowledge of horticulture practices; maintains tools and equipment to ensure safety; attends safety meetings; reads blueprints; maintains parts inventory on vehicle; completes Irrigation Reports and Service Requests; available for “on call” emergencies; role models PPE usage; installs, programs, and monitors computerized, centralized, and large-scale (i.e., 25 or more clocks) irrigation systems; and provides excellent service (e.g., accurate, complete, and timely) to clients, work-site partners, and Company staff in a courteous and efficient manner. EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE An example of the preferred education, training, and/or experience that demonstrates possession of the knowledge, skills, and competencies for this position includes: at least one (1) year of professional irrigation experience similar to that described above. Working Conditions: Work is conducted predominantly outdoors, including exposure to extremely hot, cold, and freezing temperatures, and noise levels; exposure to dust, pesticides, herbicides, grease, oils, snow removal chemicals, fumes, and electrical currents. Background Investigation: Incumbents must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Misdemeanor and/or felony convictions may be disqualifying depending on type, number, severity, and recency. Prior to appointment, candidates may be subject to a background investigation and/or drug test. Introductory Period: Incumbents appointed to this job classification serve an introductory period of 90 days.
