A **Medical/Surgical Nurse** (also known as Med-Surg Nurse) provides care to patients in various healthcare settings, typically in hospitals. Their role is to monitor and manage patients recovering from surgery, illness, or injury, ensuring they receive proper medical treatment and support throughout their recovery.
### Key Responsibilities:
1. **Patient Care and Monitoring**:
- Assess patient conditions by observing physical and emotional symptoms.
- Administer prescribed medications and treatments.
- Monitor vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and oxygen levels.
- Assist with personal care activities, including bathing, dressing, and feeding.
- Assist in post-surgical recovery and wound care.
2. **Collaborating with Healthcare Team**:
- Work closely with physicians, surgeons, physical therapists, and other medical staff to coordinate care.
- Provide updates on patient status, changes in condition, or concerns to the healthcare team.
- Prepare and maintain patient records, including medical histories and treatment plans.
3. **Patient Education**:
- Educate patients and their families about medical conditions, post-operative care, and medication regimens.
- Offer emotional support to patients recovering from surgery or illness.
4. **Emergency Response**:
- Recognize and respond to patient complications, such as infection, shock, or respiratory distress, in a timely manner.
- Administer CPR or other life-saving procedures as necessary.
5. **Administering IV Therapy**:
- Insert and manage intravenous lines for fluid and medication administration.
### Skills and Qualifications:
- **Nursing Degree** (Associate's or Bachelor's in Nursing)
- **Registered Nurse (RN) license** in the state of practice
- Basic life support (BLS) and advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certifications.
- Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
- Experience in post-operative, medical, or surgical care is often preferred.
### Work Environment:
- Hospitals, outpatient surgical centers, long-term care facilities.
- Shifts may vary, including nights, weekends, and holidays, due to patient care needs.
