Job Overview The Substance Abuse Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides comprehensive, evidence-based medical and psychiatric care to individuals enrolled in Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) services for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The NP focuses on medical and psychiatric assessment, medication management, and ongoing stabilization for clients who do not require 24-hour inpatient care but need structured, intensive clinical services. This role integrates closely with a multidisciplinary PHP treatment team to support recovery, safety, and continuity of care, in compliance with state and federal regulations, Joint Commission standards, and organizational policies. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive initial and ongoing medical and psychiatric evaluations for clients admitted to the Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). Diagnose substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions using DSM-5 criteria. Prescribe, manage, and monitor medications for medication-assisted treatment (MAT), psychiatric stabilization, and ongoing recovery support in accordance with PHP level-of-care standards. Evaluate clients for medical appropriateness for PHP admission and continued participation, including step-up or step-down recommendations. Monitor client progress, medication adherence, side effects, and clinical stability throughout PHP participation. Collaborate with physicians, therapists, nurses, and case managers to develop, implement, and update individualized treatment plans. Provide medical oversight for withdrawal symptoms that may persist post-detox and identify when higher levels of care are required. Order, review, and interpret laboratory tests and diagnostic studies relevant to PHP treatment. Deliver patient education on medications, recovery planning, relapse prevention, and health maintenance. Respond to medical or psychiatric changes during program hours and participate in crisis intervention as needed. Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), including PHP-specific assessments and progress notes. Participate in multidisciplinary treatment team meetings, utilization review, and discharge planning. Ensure compliance with Joint Commission standards, state licensing requirements, DEA regulations, and HIPAA. Coordinate care with external providers to support continuity of care following PHP discharge. Provide clinical consultation and support to PHP nursing and clinical staff as assigned. Experience Master’s or Doctoral degree in Nursing from an accredited Nurse Practitioner program. Current, unrestricted Nurse Practitioner license in the state of practice. National NP certification (e.g., ANCC, AANP). DEA registration and eligibility to prescribe controlled substances. X-waiver or current eligibility/authorization to prescribe buprenorphine (if applicable by role and state law). Current BLS certification; ACLS preferred. Minimum of 1–3 years of clinical experience as a Nurse Practitioner preferred Prior experience in substance use disorder treatment, detoxification, psychiatry, or behavioral health strongly preferred. Experience with MAT (e.g., buprenorphine, naltrexone) preferred. Strong clinical assessment and diagnostic skills in addiction medicine and mental health. Knowledge of withdrawal management protocols, MAT, and evidence-based treatment modalities. Ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary treatment team. Excellent communication, documentation, and organizational skills. Demonstrated ability to provide compassionate, nonjudgmental, and culturally competent care. Proficiency with EMR systems and clinical documentation standards. Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced clinical environment. Occasional schedule flexibility may be required based on census, acuity, or program needs.
