LIGHT EQUIPMENT OPERATOR DEPARTMENT: STREETS AND SANITATIONHOURS: AS ASSIGNEDREPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF STREETS AND SANITATIONFLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPTSAFETY SENSITIVE: YESJOB SUMMARYThe position of Light Equipment Operator entails operation of light and heavy construction equipment in support of street construction, upkeep, and maintenance; also includes general labor in support of the street department. The Light Equipment Operator works under the general supervision of the Director of Streets and Sanitation.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSOperates light-duty equipment such as small pick-up trucks, dump trucks, flatbeds, riding mower, small or farm tractor, bucket trucks, and backhoe, etc.Operates medium and heavy equipment under close supervision and on an occasional basis as required.Performs duties such as catch basin cleaning, pipe laying, general road and facility maintenance, and street patching.Loads materials and supplies and delivers to the assigned location.Uses various hand tools to dig, sweep, spread, level and move materials such as concrete, gravel, sand, dirt, and asphalt, etc.Picks up trash, leaves, junk and other debris and delivers to landfill or city shops.Sets up barricades and flags traffic around work sites.Maintains a safe and clean work environment.Identify safety hazards and take all necessary corrective action to eliminate or minimize the hazards.Operates backpack chemical sprayer to spray manholes, ditches and roadside areas with chemicals to control insects and weeds.Perform light maintenance duties such as cleaning, greasing and oiling machines and equipment as needed.Notes and reports malfunctions of equipment to the proper authority.Document maintenance logs on assigned equipment.Perform all other related duties as assigned and required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESKnowledge of City of Lincoln policies, and procedures and knowledge of the specific department rules, policies, and procedures.Knowledge of the operation of various types of light equipment, such as trucks, mowers, and tractors, and additional assigned equipment and tools.Ability to diagnose and perform minor repairs and maintenance on assigned equipment.Ability to read, understand and apply operating manuals, plans, directives, and specifications and visualize two-dimensional drawings in three dimensions.Ability to read and distinguish road signs and work orders.Knowledge of traffic laws and ordinances pertaining to the safe and legal operation of trucks and equipment.Ability to withstand constant jerking and bouncing while operating equipment.Ability to prioritize and organize work and meet required deadlines.Ability to exercise sound judgement within the scope of responsibility.Ability to communicate specific, and sometimes detailed, instructions to assigned personnel.Establish and maintain effective relationships with City staff, City Council, community organizations, volunteers, government agencies, public, contractors and vendors.QUALIFICATIONSMust have a minimum of one (1) year of light equipment experience in operating a tractor with attachments, loader, bush hog, light to medium duty trucks and zero turn mowers.Must be willing to work non-standard hours and overtime as required.Must be able to pass a background check.Must possess adequate computer skills with knowledge of common office software and willingness to learn special software related to the position.Must possess and maintain a valid Alabama driver's license a valid Alabama driver's license, Class B CDL or obtain within (6) six months from date of hire and a driving record suitable for insurability.Must be willing to travel overnight to attend continuing education courses and workshops.Must be physically able to perform the essential functions of the position.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe following list is not exhaustive and other duties may be required and assigned. Sitting up to one (1) hour or longer to operate equipment, or continuously standing up to one (1) hour or longer to maintain or repair equipment is required.Job duties will require regular reaching/stooping/squatting/kneeling to inspect, maintain and repair equipment. Handling/feeling/gripping to check fittings, place nuts and screws, pushing and pulling to tighten bolts with wrench, etc., up to 115 lbs. at waist height is required.Job duties will require the ability to climb steps up to 26 inches high or more dependent on the equipment or vehicle, etc. being used.Employees frequently lift and carry light and occasionally heavy objects and distinguish between shades of color. Lifting up to 80 lbs. unassisted may be required to raise and lower ramps, lifting and carrying other various tools, equipment and supplies up to 60 lbs., more than 10 feet.Job duties are typically performed in an outside work environment where temperatures will vary. Job duties will require the ability to work in heat, cold, rain, etc.Job duties require the ability to talk, express, or exchange ideas by means of spoken words and/or hear and perceive the nature of sounds by ear.Employees must be able to adapt to and perform under moderate stress.Job duties require regular, punctual attendance consistent with the ADA, FMLA and other federal, state and local standards.DISCLAIMER
