Java Software Engineer

Employment Type: Full-TimeAbout the RoleWe are seeking a highly skilled, hands-on Senior Software Engineer to join a growing technology team developing sophisticated AI-powered applications. This is a true engineering role for someone who is a strong coder at their core. The ideal candidate has significant experience building middleware and backend applications in Java, along with the ability to work effectively within a React-based front end. Experience working with AI technologies is important; however, we are looking for an engineer who understands the fundamentals of software development and can independently design, troubleshoot, and write high-quality code. AI should be a tool that enhances your development process—not something you rely on to do the development for you. You will work closely with senior technical leadership and other engineers across middleware, AI, and UI development to build scalable, reliable products in a fast-moving environment.

Key Responsibilities: Design, develop, test, and maintain scalable middleware and backend applications, primarily using Java. Develop and support integrations between backend services, APIs, AI components, databases, and front-end applications. Work within a React environment and collaborate closely with UI/front-end engineers. Write clean, efficient, maintainable, and well-documented production code. Troubleshoot complex technical issues across multiple layers of an application. Participate in architecture and technical design discussions. Build and maintain APIs and integrations between internal and external systems. Participate in code reviews and contribute to engineering standards and best practices. Collaborate with engineering leadership and other developers throughout the full software development lifecycle. Work with AI-enabled products and technologies while maintaining a strong understanding of the underlying code, architecture, and engineering principles. Use AI development tools appropriately to improve productivity without sacrificing technical understanding, code quality, or independent problem-solving. Contribute in a fast-paced environment where priorities can evolve quickly as products and technology continue to grow.

Qualifications: Strong professional software development experience with demonstrated ability to independently build production-quality applications. Advanced Java development skills are required. Strong experience with middleware development, APIs, integrations, and backend systems. Experience working with React and modern web application architecture. Solid understanding of object-oriented programming, data structures, software design patterns, and application architecture. Experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and integrating multiple systems and services. Strong debugging and problem-solving abilities. Experience working with databases and data-driven applications. Familiarity with AI, machine learning, LLMs, or AI-enabled software applications. Ability to read, understand, troubleshoot, and improve existing code—not simply generate new code using AI tools. Comfortable working independently while collaborating closely with a distributed engineering team. Strong communication skills and the ability to clearly explain technical decisions and challenges.

Preferred Qualifications: Experience with Python. Experience building or supporting AI-powered applications. Experience with cloud-based environments and distributed systems. Experience with microservices and complex middleware architectures. Previous experience in a startup or high-growth technology environment. Located in the Eastern or Central Time Zone.

Base Salary: $100,000–$120,000 Fully remote work environment
