CNC Programmer & Machinist

Job descriptionAs the Research and Design CNC Programmer and Machinist, you will be responsible for programming, setting up, and operating 5-axis CNC machines to produce high-precision parts according to specifications. Duties include interpreting technical drawings and 3Dmodels, selecting appropriate tools and materials, and ensuring the accuracy and quality of the finished products. You will also perform routine maintenance on machines and troubleshoot any issues that arise. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and proficiency in CNC programming software are essential. Experience with MasterCAM software and a solid understanding of machining processes are essential to be successful in this role. Responsibilities and Duties • Programming: Write and modify CNC programs to produce quick turn Research and Design parts according to technical drawings, models and specifications. Use CAD/CAM software, MasterCAM, to create and optimize CNC programs. • Setup: Set up 5-axis CNC machines and other equipment, by installing and aligning tools, fixtures, and workpieces. Select appropriate tools, cutting speeds, and feed rates for each job. • Operations: Operate CNC machines to perform tasks such as drilling, milling, turning, and grinding. Monitor machine operations and make adjustments as necessary to ensure precision and quality. • Inspection: Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) to ensure they meet specifications. Perform in-process inspections and make necessary corrections to maintain quality. • Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance on CNC machines to keep them in optimal working condition. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with machines and equipment as they arise. • Quality Control: Maintain high standards of quality by adhering to company procedures and industry standards. Document quality issues and work to identify and implement corrective actions. • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of machine setups, programming changes, and production data. Prepare and update technical documentation as needed. • Safety: Follow all safety protocols and procedures to ensure a safe working environment. Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and ensure machines are operated safely. • Collaboration: Work closely with engineers, designers, and other team members to optimize processes and achieve project goals. Provide feedback and suggestions to improve efficiency and quality. • Continuous Improvement: Stay updated with the latest CNC technologies, techniques, and best practices. Participate in training and development opportunities to enhance skills and knowledge. Qualifications, Skills, and Attributes • Education: High School Diploma or equivalent required. Vocational or technical training in CNC machining including 5-axis, manufacturing technology, or a related field. An associate degree in CNC Machining, Manufacturing Technology, Industrial Maintenance, or related field is preferred. • Experience: At least 4+ years of experience in CNC machining or related field is required. 6+ years of experience in CNC machining and programming is preferred. • Technical Proficiency: Expertise in operating and programming CNC machines. Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, MasterCAM. • Blueprint Reading: Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics. • Precision Measurement: Use of precision measuring instruments to ensure parts meet specifications. • Programming Skills: Writing and modifying CNC programs to optimize machining processes for 5-axis machining. • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve machining issues. • Mechanical Aptitude: Understanding of machining processes, tools, and materials. • Computer Skills: Proficiency in using Windows OS computer systems for programming and data entry. • Mathematical Skills: Good grasp of mathematics, including geometry and trigonometry, for programming and setup tasks. • Desired Attributes: Attention to Detail: Precision and accuracy in performing tasks and inspections to ensure quality. Occasionally lift and carry heavier items, often with the help of equipment or team members. • Manual Handling: Capability to handle and maneuver objects and materials safely, using proper lifting techniques. • Pushing & Pulling: Ability to push and pull objects such as carts, toolboxes, and machine components. • Stamina: Sustained physical effort throughout the workday, including repetitive motions and long periods of standing.
