Counselor, Alpha - $100,000/year USD
$100,000/year W2 salary with weekly pay; health, dental, and vision benefits begin on day oneOn-site role at an Alpha K-8 campus in Denver, CO; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT (Salt Lake City area); or Toronto, Canada (relocation assistance available)You do not teach. You drive motivation. The most meaningful support you can offer a student who reached 99% of their goal is to refuse to call it complete. If that approach feels uncomfortable, this role is not for you. If it energizes you—because maintaining high expectations is how you demonstrate belief in a student's potential—continue reading. At Alpha, academic learning happens through AI-powered applications. No traditional lectures. No textbooks. Half of your day is spent facilitating one-hour life-skills workshops covering topics like public speaking, focus, and constructive feedback. The other half is dedicated to one-on-one or small-group sessions where you review student progress via Coachbot analytics and coach each student toward 100% completion of their weekly app objectives. You will not follow a rigid script—workshops provide a foundation, but top performers in this role customize them and create new content when gaps emerge.A successful quarter means every student in your cohort completes their weekly app goals, passes the Test2Pass for all life-skills workshops, and at least 90% report that they value your guidance. Falling short on any of these three metrics means the role's core expectations have not been met. In your first year, you will master the established playbook; as you demonstrate your ability to uphold standards, advancement opportunities open to Lead Guide, where you mentor newer team members while continuing direct work with students. If you prefer traditional classroom teaching, require a fully prepared curriculum, or view warmth and rigorous standards as incompatible, this position is not suitable. If your background includes athletic coaching, camp counseling, tutoring students through difficult challenges, or performing for young audiences, the final interview stage involves a full day on campus coaching actual Alpha students. If that prospect excites you most, submit your application today. What You Will Be DoingFacilitating one-hour life-skills workshops for K-8 cohorts on topics including public speaking, focus, feedback, and other foundational competencies, customizing the playbook and creating new sessions when you identify a needConducting daily one-on-one and small-group coaching sessions that drive every student to 100% completion of their weekly app goals, leveraging Coachbot analytics, Alpha's incentive structures (school currency, leaderboards), and individual student relationships to overcome resistanceAdministering the Test2Pass (Alpha's mastery-based assessment) for each life skill and coaching students who do not pass on their first attempt until they achieve masteryAdjusting your coaching approach across a broad age spectrum, from kindergarteners requiring high energy and physical activity to 8th graders needing direct conversation and accountabilityServing as the adult who maintains high standards and the adult students trust and want to engage with; warmth creates the foundation for challenge, and challenge demonstrates your confidence in their abilitiesWhat You Won’t Be DoingDelivering lectures at a whiteboard; academic content is provided through the apps, not through direct instruction from youCreating curriculum from the ground up; you implement a proven playbook with energy and narrative skillPassively monitoring students at computers; motivation in this model is active, personalized, and persistentReducing a weekly goal to make it easier for a student to achieve; when a student is behind, the solution is supporting the student, not lowering the standardGrading assignments, conducting standardized test preparation, or handling parent communications; Campus Leads manage parent-facing responsibilities, and the other tasks are not part of this modelCounselor Key ResponsibilitiesEnsure every student in your K-8 cohort completes their weekly learning objectives, achieves mastery in each life skill, and finishes the year reporting that they valued your guidance.Basic RequirementsWilling to work on-site at an Alpha campus in Denver, CO; Oklahoma City, OK; Tulsa, OK; Nashville, TN; Austin, TX; Brownsville, TX; Fort Worth, TX; Houston, TX (Central, South, or The Woodlands); Park City, UT; or Toronto, Canada (relocation assistance provided)Bachelor's degree in any fieldMinimum 3 years of direct experience working with K-8 students (classroom instruction, coaching, tutoring, camp counseling, or youth program leadership)A concrete example you can describe of motivating a K-8 student toward a challenging goal: the goal itself, your actions, and the resultWillingness to allow AI to manage instructional content while you concentrate on motivation and life-skills coachingDaily use of generative AI tools (such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude)Legal authorization to work in the US without visa sponsorship (or in Canada for the Toronto campus)Nice-to-have RequirementsBackground in youth sports coaching, debate, camp leadership, theater, or after-school programs where you held direct responsibility for motivating students toward defined objectivesPersonal track record of high achievement (academic, athletic, or professional) that demonstrates holding others to rigorous standards is intrinsic to your approach, not performativeStorytelling ability and stage presence capable of engaging a room of 12-year-olds for an hour without needing to raise your voiceProven ability to transform disengaged or resistant students into active, engaged participantsAbout AlphaWant to join a learning rebellion that’s transforming the traditional classroom?
