POSITION TITLE: DATA ENGINEER lLOCATION: BANGOR, MEREPORTS TO: DIRECTOR OF ITPOSITION STATUS: EXEMPT, NON-BARGAINING UNITThe IT Data Engineer I is an entry-level role responsible for aiding in the analysis of data, supporting data-driven decision-making, and assisting in the development of data pipelines and data architectures. This role requires a foundational understanding of data principles and a keen interest in learning more about data engineering. The IT Data Engineer I will also support senior colleagues in maintaining data accessibility, reliability, and security.Essential FunctionsData Architecture and Design: Assist in the design, development, and maintenance of scalable and efficient data pipelines and databases.Collaborate with stakeholders to understand data requirements and support senior team members in translating them into technical specifications and data models.Learn and apply appropriate data storage and processing technologies based on project requirements and business objectives. Data Integration And ETLAssist in the development and implementation of Extract, Transform, Load (ETL) processes to convert data from various sources into usable formats.Support ensuring data integrity, consistency, and quality throughout the ETL processes.Aid in monitoring and troubleshooting data integration workflows, identifying and resolving data-related issues and performance bottlenecks. Data Warehousing And Data Lake ManagementSupport the design, build, and maintenance of data warehouses and data lakes to aid reporting, analytics, and business intelligence initiatives.Learn and apply data partitioning, indexing, and optimization strategies to improve query performance and efficiency.Collaborate with data consumers to understand their reporting and analysis requirements and support senior team members in providing appropriate data structures and schemas.Data Governance And SecurityUnderstand and adhere to data governance policies, standards, and regulations.Support implementing data security measures, including access controls, encryption, and data masking techniques.Aid in monitoring data usage and access patterns, identifying and mitigating potential data security risks. Performance Optimization And ScalabilityLearn and apply strategies to optimize data processes and infrastructure to improve performance, scalability, and reliability.Aid in conducting performance tuning, query optimization, and indexing to enhance data retrieval and processing speed.Proactively identify and address system bottlenecks to ensure efficient data operations. Automation And EfficiencySupport the design, construction, implementation, and maintenance of automated jobs and reports.Collaborate with cross-functional teams, business analysts, and IT systems analysts, to understand their business requirements and provide data and custom application solutions. Collaboration And CommunicationCommunicate technical concepts and solutions effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Stay updated with the latest industry trends, technologies, and best practices related to data engineering.Additional ResponsibilitiesParticipate in after-hours call out for application support and engagement of Managed Service provider as required.Participate actively with related user groups.Other related duties as assigned including designated duties associated with Storm Restoration.REQUIRED OR PREFERRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Systems, or a related field.Proven experience (1-2 years) working as a data engineer or in a similar role.Basic proficiency in SQL and experience with relational databases (e.g., Oracle, MySQL, MS SQL, PostgreSQL).Familiarity with core enterprise applications sitting in a UNIX and Windows environment.Familiarity with programming languages such as Python, Java, R for data manipulation, scripting, visualizations, and analysis is a plus.Basic understanding of data modeling, data warehousing, and ETL principles.Interest in big data technologies and frameworks (e.g., Hadoop, Spark, Hive, Kafka) and cloud-based data platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) is a plus.Knowledge of data governance, data security, and privacy practices.Familiarity with data visualization and reporting tools (e.g. Plotly, Tableau, Power BI) is a plus.Familiarity with computer networking, current systems software, protocols, and standards, especially routing/switching/security, Active Directory, Voice over IP.Travel for training and User Group participation required.Position may require extra hours.Working ScheduleFull Time: 40 hours per week.
