Spacecraft Solar Array Engineer

You will own real decisions, work across disciplines, and contribute directly to hardware that will fly.─────────────────────────────────────────────THE ROLEWe are seeking a Spacecraft Solar Array Engineer to lead the design, development, qualification, and in-orbit performance optimization of spacecraft photovoltaic systems — from initial concept through end-of-life.─────────────────────────────────────────────KEY RESPONSIBILITIESSolar Array Design & ArchitectureDesign spacecraft solar array systems including cell technology selection (multi-junction), string configuration, panel layout, and system interfacesDevelop power budgets and orbital energy balance models across eclipse cycles, pointing constraints, and end-of-life degradation scenariosProduce interface control documents (ICDs), design specifications, and technical documentationAnalysis & ModelingPerform electrical, thermal, and structural analyses of solar array assembliesModel radiation effects, thermal cycling, and long-term degradationEvaluate system-level performance impacts across mission scenariosHardware Development & IntegrationSupport development of deployable solar array systems including structural interfaces and articulation mechanismsContribute to rapid prototyping, hardware integration, and validationCollaborate with structures, avionics, manufacturing, and supply chain teamsTest & Qualification- Define and execute qualification and acceptance test campaigns: TVAC, vibration, shock, electrical performance, and lifecycle testing- Analyze test results, respond to anomalies, and drive design improvements─────────────────────────────────────────────REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSBachelor's degree in Electrical, Aerospace, or Mechanical Engineering (or related field)5+ years of experience in spacecraft solar arrays, spacecraft power systems, or space-rated photovoltaic hardwareDemonstrated experience in at least one of: solar array design/sizing, power system modeling, or space hardware qualification and testingU.S. citizenship required (export-controlled work)─────────────────────────────────────────────PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSM.S. or Ph.D. in Electrical, Aerospace, or Mechanical EngineeringHands-on flight program experience with solar arrays or power subsystemsFamiliarity with power regulation, string configuration, and bypass diode designExperience with radiation effects, degradation modeling, and ECSS/NASA/MIL qualification standardsHands-on lab experience: hardware builds, soldering/cell interconnection, environmental testingExperience with deployable structures or solar array drive mechanisms (SADMs)─────────────────────────────────────────────COMPENSATION & BENEFITSCompetitive Base SalaryRelocation Assistance availableMedical, dental, and vision insuranceDisability and life insuranceCompetitive paid time off401(k) with employer matching─────────────────────────────────────────────ITAR / EXPORT CONTROL REQUIREMENTTo comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations (ITAR), applicants must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.─────────────────────────────────────────────ABOUT SET DEVELOPMENTSET Development is a premier aerospace consulting firm providing highly specialized engineering talent across space, defense, and advanced technology programs.
