Controller

The RoleThe Controller is responsible for leading all accounting operations, financial reporting, internal controls, compliance, and audit activities. This role owns the integrity of the Company's financial statements and accounting processes while supporting the organization's growth across cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale, and retail operations.The Controller will partner closely with Finance, Operations, Treasury, and external advisors to establish scalable accounting processes, improve financial visibility, and ensure compliance with all regulatory and reporting requirements.This position reports to the CFO and is based in Attleboro, MA.Financial Reporting & Close ProcessOwn the monthly, quarterly, and annual financial close processEnsure timely and accurate preparation of financial statementsPrepare of monthly financial reporting package to include a balance sheet, income statement, P&Ls broken out for each Nova Farms business vertical, variance to the budget report, cash flow forecast, breakeven analysis and backlogMaintain monthly close calendar and reporting deadlinesOversee account reconciliations and balance sheet integrityReview journal entries and accounting estimatesCoordinate monthly management reporting requirementsGeneral Accounting & Technical AccountingMaintain the general ledger and chart of accountsEstablish and enforce accounting policies and proceduresEnsure compliance with U.S. GAAPManage accruals, reserves, fixed assets, depreciation, and prepaid expensesOversee inventory accounting and cost accounting processesEvaluate accounting treatment for new transactions, contracts, and business initiativesSupport implementation of standard costing and inventory valuation methodologiesInventory & Cost AccountingMaintain accurate inventory valuation across cultivation, manufacturing, wholesale, and retail operationsOversee inventory reconciliations and cycle count processesReview inventory reserves and write-offsAnalyze production variances, yield variances, and inventory absorptionSupport development of SKU-level standard costsPartner with Operations to improve inventory controls and reporting accuracyAccounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & PayrollOversee AP, AR, and payroll functionsEnsure timely processing of vendor payments and customer collectionsMonitor aging reports and collection effortsReview payroll processing and payroll tax complianceEstablish scalable procedures and controls for transactional accounting activitiesSupport cash management and Treasury processesTax & Regulatory ComplianceCoordinate preparation of federal, state, and local tax filingsSupport income tax, sales tax, excise tax, and payroll tax complianceCoordinate with external tax advisorsEnsure compliance with cannabis-specific reporting and regulatory requirementsMonitor changes in accounting, tax, and cannabis regulationsInternal Controls & Process ImprovementDesign, implement, and monitor internal controlsMaintain appropriate segregation of duties and approval workflowsDevelop accounting policies and standard operating proceduresIdentify process improvement opportunities across accounting operationsLead implementation and optimization of accounting systems and financial controlsImprove reporting automation and data accuracyAudit & External Stakeholder ManagementServe as primary accounting contact for external auditorsCoordinate annual financial statement audits and reviewsManage workers' compensation, sales tax, lender, and regulatory auditsPrepare audit schedules and supporting documentationSupport lender reporting and compliance requirementsMaintain relationships with banks, auditors, tax advisors, and regulatory agenciesTeam LeadershipBuild, develop, and manage the accounting teamEstablish departmental goals, priorities, and performance expectationsMentor and develop accounting staffCreate a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and operational excellenceAssist in recruiting and onboarding accounting personnel as the organization growsQualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting requiredCPA required7+ years of progressive accounting experiencePublic accounting experience preferredManufacturing, consumer products, retail, or cannabis industry experience preferredStrong knowledge of U.S. GAAP and financial reportingExperience managing month-end close and audit processesExperience with inventory and cost accountingAdvanced Excel skillsStrong analytical, organizational, and communication skillsDemonstrated experience leading and developing accounting teams
