Facility Maintenance - Jail - Journeyman Electrician Facility Maintenance - Jail, 417 South Calhoun Street, Fort Wayne, Indiana, United States of America Job Description JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN Department: Maintenance | FLSA Status: Non-exempt | Classification/Level: Labor, PG-7 | Date: 04/2023 Under the direction of the Deputy Supervisor of Downtown Areas, the Journeyman Electrician is responsible for performing journey-level maintenance, repair, diagnosis, troubleshooting, construction, fabrication and preventive maintenance involving commercial-level electrical, building controls, electronic heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). This position is covered as defined by the Board of Commissioners of the County of Allen Employee Handbook. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Responsible for installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical systems, components, switchgears, motors, compressors, generators, transformer taps and equipment related to commercial buildings, including running wiring, installing switches, outlets, and circuit breakers, ensuring compliance with electrical codes. Troubleshoot electrical issues and identify root causes using testing devices to diagnose faults. Read and interpret electrical blueprints, schematics and technical drawings to plan and execute installations and repairs. Adhere to safety protocols and standards, including lockout/tagout procedures, PPE usage and maintaining a safe work environment. Comprehensive understanding of electrical codes and regulations. Conduct thorough testing and inspection of electrical systems to ensure they meet specified standards. Collaborate with other electricians, contractors and tradespersons on projects, optimizing resource use and minimizing service disruptions. Lead others in highly skilled fabrication or modifications of equipment, facilities, systems or components from verbal directions or technical references. Prepare estimates for complex operations and document material usage in a Computer Maintenance Management System. Maintain accurate records of electrical work, creating work orders and recording repairs. Provide excellent customer service and communicate effectively with other departments. Prepare oral and written activity reports. Stay updated with industry advancements and participate in ongoing training. May respond to after-hour emergencies. Perform all other duties as assigned, including overtime. REQUIREMENTS High School Diploma or GED with successful completion of an electrical apprentice program. Minimum five years of experience as an electrician. Minimum four years of journey-level experience in industrial and commercial electrical installation, maintenance and repair. Journey-level experience in operation, maintenance, repair and control wiring of electrical distribution gear, motor control centers, power systems, generators, electrical/electronic locking systems, lighting and raceway installations. Completion of a state-accredited electrical apprenticeship program. Valid Driver's License to perform field work or operate county owned vehicles. DIFFICULTY OF WORK The Journeyman Electrician must use a variety of equipment and machinery, plan and lay out work to complete tasks and projects on time, and perform complex work when maintaining emergency equipment. RESPONSIBILITY Responsible for performing quality control analysis on equipment and supported systems to ensure proper functioning and to execute remedial actions to assure optimum operations. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS Maintains frequent communication with other county employees, vendors and the general public regarding electrical, phone, internet and A/V installation for the Allen County facilities. WORKING CONDITIONS Requires walking, standing, lifting up to fifty pounds, bending, reaching, kneeling, crawling and climbing ladders. Must handle extreme weather conditions outdoors, observe safety precautions and maintain detailed inspection standards. SUPERVISION None LICENSING Valid Allen County Journeyman's License in Electrical, HVAC, Mechanical, or Plumbing preferred. Valid Driver's License to operate county vehicles. IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR Deputy Downtown Supervisor HOURS 8:00 am – 4:30 pm; 37.5 hours/week; overtime as needed.
