THE POSITIONReporting to the Head of Upper School, the part-time Upper School Science Teacher teaches the International Baccalaureate (IB) Environmental Systems and Society courses and collaborates with colleagues in the Science Department, learning specialists, and administrative colleagues to plan, create, and implement curriculum. Applicants should be passionate about science and preferably will have prior experience teaching in the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme.We seek candidates who are able to teach IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) to 11th and 12th grade students at both the Standard Level (SL) and High Level (HL) expectations through an interdisciplinary lens. The role includes designing and facilitating inquiry-based instruction, guiding students through Internal Assessments (IA), and integrating both scientific and socio-political dimensions of environmental issues. In collaboration with the Science Department, the teacher may also contribute to elective offerings or interdisciplinary coursework. As departmental needs evolve based on student enrollment and program development, teaching responsibilities may be adjusted accordingly.Primary Responsibilities IncludeThis position reports to the Head of Upper SchoolTeach two sections of Upper School IB Environmental Systems and Society HL and SL levels for 11th and 12th grades. Courses are generally co-seated.Serve as a grade-level advisor to a small cohort of students, supporting their academic, social, and emotional growthDesign and implement lessons that align with the IB Diploma Programme framework, centering inquiry, analysis, and global perspectivesCollaborate with grade-level and departmental colleagues to plan and continuously evolve an engaging and relevant, differentiated curriculumIntegrate interdisciplinary approaches and contemporary texts to reflect a range of voices and lived experiencesCommunicate consistently and effectively with families, students, and administrators regarding student progress and wellbeingContribute to regular assessment, grading, narrative comment writing, and student feedback cyclesParticipate fully in the life of the Upper School, including advisory, supervisory duties, and community-wide activitiesMaintain a well-organized, inclusive, and supportive learning environmentQualifications And Characteristics SoughtBachelor of Arts in the subject or related area (Environmental Science, Ecology, Biology, Geography) required; Master of Arts in the subject or another field (preferred) Familiarity with the International Baccalaureate program (preferred)3-5 years teaching experience (preferred) Experience teaching IB Environmental Systems and Societies (ESS) or another IB science course preferredFamiliarity with IB philosophy, assessment practices, and internal assessment (IA) requirementsStrong interdisciplinary grounding across both scientific and social systems and experience designing inquiry-based, concept-driven units aligned to IB standardsHas relevant experience in an Upper School setting and strong classroom management skills Demonstrated ability to scaffold complex scientific and socio-political conceptsExperience supporting student research, writing, and project-based learningIs invested in continued professional growth Demonstrates strong communication skills (oral and written)Approaches work with flexibility, patience, grace, connection, and a willingness to learn Demonstrates cultural competency and a commitment to diversity, equity, social justice, and inclusionBrings a passion and desire to create a joyful learning environmentRespect for the life of the childCompassion, integrity, and open-mindedness in all interactionsCollegiality, approachability, flexibility, and adaptabilityAbility to partner and collaborate across professional statuses, i.e., with all colleagues (i.e., staff, leadership, families, student body, local and national independent school communities, and the neighborhood community)Physical Requirements Of The JobMust be able to work in an office environment including prolonged periods of sitting and standing.Must be able to stand, bend over, twist and reach to access file cabinets, bookshelves and navigate office and workstation spaces.Must be able to ambulate through a classroom setting, including walking up stairs.Must be able to lift and carry small children up to 40lbs in the case of emergency.Union Status : UnionSalary Range: $36,338 - $48,600This salary range represents the expected annual salary range for this position.
