STEM Lab Mentor

Bytes and Bots is looking for a dependable and enthusiastic STEM Mentor to work with students K-12 in robotics, programming, electronics, game design, and other technology projects. This position also includes the opportunity to help coach our FIRST LEGO League (FLL) and FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC) robotics competition teams. Pay and Hours Starting pay: $18 per hour Approximately 10 hours per week on average Part-time with a flexible schedule Additional hours may be available during camps, workshops, competition season, and special events This position is a great opportunity for a university or community college student studying computer science, engineering, robotics, education, or a related field. It may also be a good fit for someone looking for flexible part-time work or a side job. Locations Applicants must be willing and able to work at either of our Orange County locations: Irvine, California Lake Forest, California Responsibilities Help students complete robotics, programming, electronics, and engineering projects Teach and support students with different ages and experience levels Assist with LEGO robotics, Arduino, Raspberry Pi, Python, Unity, and other STEM platforms Help prepare FLL and FTC teams for robotics competitions Support students with robot design, building, programming, testing, and troubleshooting Encourage teamwork, creativity, problem-solving, and good sportsmanship Maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment Communicate clearly with students, parents, and other mentors Attend practices, scrimmages, tournaments, and competitions when scheduled Qualifications Some prior programming, robotics, engineering, or technical experience Comfortable learning new software, hardware, and teaching methods Patient and able to explain technical concepts to children and teenagers Dependable, responsible, and professional Strong communication and problem-solving skills Willing to complete on-the-job training Able to work at both the Irvine and Lake Forest locations Available for some weekday afternoons, evenings, and weekends Interested in participating in FLL and FTC practices and competition events Previous teaching, tutoring, coaching, or mentoring experience is helpful but not required. Most program-specific training will be provided on the job. Preferred Experience Experience with any of the following is helpful but not required: FIRST LEGO League or FIRST Tech Challenge LEGO robotics Python, Java, C#, or block-based programming Arduino or Raspberry Pi Electronics and soldering CAD, 3D printing, or mechanical design Unity, Roblox, Minecraft, or game development Working with elementary, middle school, or high school students Schedule This is a flexible part-time position averaging approximately 10 hours per week. Typical hours include weekday afternoons, evenings, and weekends. The schedule may vary based on class enrollment, employee availability, camps, and robotics competition schedules. FLL and FTC events may occasionally require longer weekend shifts. We will work with university and community college students when possible to accommodate their class schedules.
