Stantec is seeking Archaeological Field Technicians to assist with upcoming fieldwork that will occur primarily in Maine and New York. The successful applicant will be responsible for executing field related tasks under the supervision of an archaeological field supervisor. This position requires extensive travel with frequent overnight stays.Your Key ResponsibilitiesThe position will primarily consist of fieldwork but may include exposure to a wider range of other duties including laboratory research and analysis. Responsibilities may include but are not limited to: perform archaeological fieldwork tasks including controlled surface survey; shovel test survey; and excavation. Duties may also include cleaning, cataloging, photographing, and labeling artifacts recovered from surface collection and excavation.Your Capabilities and CredentialsExperience conducting Phase I, II, and III archaeological survey including inventory, testing, and/or data recovery.Previous experience with digital field recording (e.g., ESRI Field Maps app for ArcGIS)Assist with setting up a site grid, datum, and excavation units; Mapping site plans and individual shovel tests, units, and features in plan and profile.Identifying historic and precontact artifacts following standard collection procedures.Identifying cultural features.Adaptability and willingness to work as part of a team and independently.Ability and willingness to work under varied weather conditions.Ability to walk and conduct fieldwork for long hours through sometimes rugged terrain and ability to carry equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds is required.Dedicated to following and promoting a strong safety culture; Industry-specific safety training certificates is an asset.Detail oriented; resourceful; self-motivated; strong initiativePositive and energetic attitudeFrequent out-of-town travel, potentially for extended periods of timeEducation and ExperienceB.A./B.S. in anthropology/archaeology or related field with sufficient experienceSuccessful completion of an archaeology field school, preferredAt least 6 months of experience conducting archaeological survey and excavation, preferredKnowledge of prehistoric and historic material cultureAbility to complete physically demanding tasks in remote areas and/or humid continental climate, including walking, hiking, carrying loads up to 50 pounds, and digging.Qualified applicants should exhibit strong technical skills, good communication skills, and feel comfortable making decisions in the fieldMust have a valid driver’s license and personal transportationThis description is not a comprehensive list of activities, duties, or responsibilities that may be required of the employee and other duties, responsibilities, and activities may be assigned or may be changed at any time with or without notice.About StantecStantec is a global leader in sustainable engineering, architecture, and environmental consulting.
