Bus Driver TraineeThe driver trainee position is intended to provide the employee with the following opportunities:Gain "real-world" experience by observing bus drivers on duty as they transport students and manage student safety as well as assisting as a bus aide as neededReceive required classroom and hands-on training to gain relevant experience to successfully complete the required DPS exams within the specified amount of timeBecome familiar with the standards and expectation of the school bus driver position for Crosby ISDPractice and exhibit effective student management techniques on the busExhibit good work habits and strong work ethicEducation/Certification:High School Diploma or GEDCertified or certifiable as a Texas School Bus DriverHold or obtain a CDL, class B minimum with a "P" & "S" EndorsementMust be a minimum of 21 years of ageMust pass Annual State of Texas School Bus Driver PhysicalsMust pass ALL Federal DOT Drug and Alcohol TestSpecial Knowledge/Skills:Ability to exercise judgment in decision makingStrong organizational, communication and interpersonal skillsMust have empathy for childrenKnow federal, state, local and school district regulations, procedures and laws as relating to operating a passenger vehicleAbility to carry out written and oral instructionsAbility to control large groups of childrenAbility to read, understand and use a mapProficiency in English, both written and verbalExaminations:Willing and able to submit to substance abuse testing as prescribed by Federal DOTAble to meet or exceed annual state required physical examinationMajor Responsibilities and Duties:Work as a school bus monitor, assisting drivers in the mornings and afternoons while training to operate a school bus on an assigned route in transporting children to and from school, as well as related activities, in a safe, timely manner during the middle of the day.Equipment Used:School bus, school bus broom, fuel pump, wheelchair lift, two-way radioWorking Conditions:Mental Demands:Ability to maintain emotional control under stressAbility to maintain effective control over challenged students and adultsDealing with life threatening emergencies as well as coping with screaming childrenAbility to communicate effectively (verbal)Complying with all Crosby ISD policies and proceduresPhysical Demands/Environmental Factors:Load and unload vehicle, making frequent stops (up to 100 per day), lifting and pulling up to 50 lbs. Operating "on-hand" device to open and close bus doorAbility to operate lift equipmentClimbing on and off bus to assist challenged ridersWalking to and from parking lots, in aisles on board bus, around bus for inspectionsPushing wheel chairsUsing repetitive motions in turning the steering wheel and shifting the transmissionLong periods of sitting in driving the vehicle and attending meetingsCommunicating verbally to announce streets/stops, talking with passengers and two-way radiosStaying alert for general traffic conditions, stopped vehicles, traffic signals, viewing color of traffic lights, inspecting vehicle, monitoring passengersAble to hear traffic sounds, emergency vehicles, passenger inquiries, monitoring the radio, detecting mechanical problemsOperates within the District in all-temperature conditionsOperate vehicles (up to 60,000 pounds GVW) up to 150 or more miles per day in rural and city traffic, following established routesThe Crosby Independent School District - in compliance with the Title VII, American Disability Act, Age Discrimination in Employment Act, Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and other statues- seeks to provide equal opportunity without regard to race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, marital or veteran status, the presence of a medical condition, disability, or any other legally protected status.
