Job Location: Lugoff, SC
Base Salary: $80K-$130K
Requirements: 5+ years of Civil Estimating Experience on DOT and Site Development Projects.
Position Overview:
We are seeking an experienced Construction Estimator to prepare accurate, competitive estimates for heavy highway and asphalt projects. The Estimator will analyze project plans and specifications, perform quantity takeoffs, develop pricing strategies, and collaborate with project managers and subcontractors to compile complete bids. Ideal candidates will have strong knowledge of roadway construction, DOT procedures, HCSS estimating software, and proven experience with paving, grading, and asphalt operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Review plans, specifications, and contract documents to determine project scope and requirements for highway, road, and asphalt projects.
Perform detailed quantity takeoffs for earthwork, grading, paving, asphalt, drainage, and related items using HCSS or similar estimating tools.
Develop comprehensive cost estimates including labor, equipment, materials, subcontractor pricing, and overhead for accurate bid submission.
Prepare bid packages, takeoff sheets, and estimate summaries; ensure compliance with DOT and owner requirements.
Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, suppliers, and subcontractors to obtain pricing and clarify scope.
Analyze historical project costs and production rates to inform unit pricing and contingency allowances.
Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies; include clear allowances for unknowns in estimates.
Maintain and update cost databases, unit price books, and estimating templates to improve estimating efficiency and accuracy.
Participate in pre-bid meetings, site visits, and constructability reviews to validate assumptions and identify cost-saving opportunities.
Support post-bid activities including bid clarifications, value engineering, and transition of awarded projects to operations.
Qualifications:
5+ years of estimating experience in heavy civil construction with emphasis on highways, roads, and asphalt/paving projects.
Proficiency with HCSS HeavyBid or similar estimating software and familiarity with industry takeoff tools.
Strong understanding of DOT specifications, pay items, and contract requirements.
Demonstrated capability in quantity takeoffs for grading, asphalt, drainage, and earthwork.
Knowledge of construction means and methods, production rates, equipment utilization, and cost drivers for paving operations.
Excellent analytical, mathematical, and communication skills with attention to detail and ability to meet tight bid deadlines.
Ability to read and interpret civil/structural plans, specifications, and survey information.
Valid driver's license and willingness to attend site visits and pre-bid meetings as required.
