The Lieutenant provides operational oversight, leads Sergeants and Deputies, and helps ensure a safe, secure, and professional environment for inmates, staff, and the public. This position plays a critical role in maintaining compliance with applicable laws, standards, and agency policies while supporting efficient daily operations. Typical Task:Supervise Sergeants and Deputies during assigned shifts Oversee daily correctional operations and inmate supervision Conduct facility inspections, review reports, and ensure compliance Lead emergency response efforts and critical incident management Train, mentor, and evaluate staff performance Manage staffing schedules, assignments, and operational readiness Ensure adherence to policies, accreditation standards, and legal requirements Maintain safety, security, and order within the facility Minimum requirements:Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in criminal justice, social science, administration, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and directly related experience may be considered instead of the preferred degree. A minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience in a correctional or law enforcement environment. Must successfully pass a background investigation before employment or promotion. This position is safety sensitive and subject to alcohol and controlled substance testing in accordance with City policy. Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license with a satisfactory driving record based on City of Hampton criteria. Additional Requirements:Must qualify to carry and use firearms pursuant to §53.1-29 of the Code of Virginia and DCJS standards.
