This is the entry-level class in the Industrial Hygienist sub-series. An employee in this class learns to perform routine safety and health inspections in compliance with Tennessee OSHA (TOSHA) regulations. This class differs from the Industrial Hygienist 2 in that an incumbent of the latter performs at the working level.Responsibilities1. Learns to handle complaints, settle disputes, and resolve grievances and conflicts. Provides guidance on a broad range of technical issues across public and private sector facilities to support regulatory compliance.2. Develops the ability to communicate effectively with diverse individuals through written correspondence, phone conversations, and in-person interactions. Gains proficiency in using standard office software such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Adobe Acrobat, as well as agency-specific systems and databases for managing case files, tracking inspections, and generating reports.3. Learns to conduct workplace inspections of varying complexity to identify hazards and potential safety or health violations. Develops skills in prioritizing work to meet deadlines and established goals, performing day-to-day administrative tasks, and participating in staff meetings and training sessions.4. Learns to gather and evaluate relevant information, facts, and documentation to assess whether workplace events or processes comply with applicable laws, regulations, or standards, and to determine violations or non-violations.5. Research and reviews printed and electronic documents to gain knowledge of occupational safety/health standards; reviews standards, directives, interpretations, Field Operations Manual (FOM), Consultation Policies and Procedures Manual (CPPM) to stay current in Occupational and Safety Health trends.6. Learns and applies proper use of industrial hygiene and safety equipment during inspections. Ensures correct selection, operation, maintenance, and calibration of instruments, and verifies the use of appropriate sampling techniques to obtain accurate and reliable field data.7. Promotes and markets the services of the On-Site Consultation Program to employers to encourage voluntary compliance and improve workplace safety.8.
