The Finance Department is seeking a dedicated professional to fill an Accountant II vacancy in the Financial Accounting and Reporting Division (FAR). The FAR Division provides current, comprehensive, and accurate information about the financial position of the City to both internal and external customers while maintaining the highest levels of customer service. This position is responsible for a diverse range of finance-related duties, including preparing, reviewing and recording accounting transactions; the coordination and preparation of annual financial reports; operating under multiple deadlines; and providing technical guidance and analysis to management on complex financial matters.
The Accountant II position performs professional accounting work, which requires the application of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, with a focus on capital assets and enterprise fund accounting. This position is responsible for a diverse range of accounting-related duties, including capital asset accounting and reporting for the City, the preparation of special handling billings, accounting support for water and wastewater joint ventures, preparing various journal entries, and performing account reconciliations.
The Accountant II is expected to work Monday through Friday at the Calvin C. Goode Building at 251 West Washington Street, Phoenix, AZ 85003 during training. Upon supervisory and department head approval, this position may work remotely up to 3 days per week or may work a flexible schedule (9/80 or 4/10). If a 4/10 or 9/80 schedule is chosen, the position is required to work in office each day.
IDEAL CANDIDATE
Ability to use SAP to review financial data and prepare journal entries.
Ability to prepare financial statements and schedules using both budgetary and accrual basis accounting.
Ability to research financial/accounting issues and work with diverse stakeholders to identify and implement solutions.
Professional oral and written communication skills.
Possess strong critical thinking and organization skills.
Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with great attention to detail.
SALARY
Pay Range: $64,604.80 to $100,235.20 annually.
Hiring Range: $64,604.80 to $90,916.80 annually.
Pay Range Explanation
Pay range is the entire compensation range for the position classification.
Hiring range is an estimate of where you can receive an offer. The actual salary offer will carefully consider a wide range of factors, including your skills, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, training, and internal equity.
Internal Only: Please understand that this is pay grade 056. If selected, your salary offer will be based on the applicable promotion or demotion worksheet in accordance with the City Pay Ordinance.
Promotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade increase.
Demotions occur when the last two digits of the pay grade decrease.
Lateral transfers occur when there is no change to the last two digits of the pay grade.
When there is a change in the first digit of the pay grade, there may also be a change to your classification or unit.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Three years of professional level experience in accounting.
Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The minimum qualifications listed above, plus:
Experience with SAP or other large ERP systems.
Experience preparing financial reports.
Experience with capital asset accounting transactions.
Experience with utility accounting transactions.
Governmental accounting/finance experience
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word.
Relevant accounting or budgeting certifications (e.g., CPA, CMA, CGFM, CIA).
