Please reach out for more details.Job Title: Surgical TechnicianDepartment: Surgical ServicesReports To: Surgery ManagerPosition Summary: THE SURGERY TECHNICIAN WORKS UNDER THE SUPERVISION OF AN RN IN THE OPERATIVE SUITE TO FACILITATE THE SAFE AND EFFECTIVE CONDUCT OF INVASIVE AND NON-INVASIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURES, ENSURING THAT THE OPERATING ROOM ENVIRONMENT IS SAFE, THAT EQUIPMENT FUNCTIONS PROPERLY, AND THAT THE OPERATIVE PROCEDURE IS CONDUCTED UNDER CONDITIONS THAT MAXIMIZE PATIENT SAFETY. THE SURGERY TECHNICIAN IS KNOWLEDGEABLE IN THE APPLICATION OF THE PRICIPLES OF ASEPSIS AND STERILE TECHNIQUE TO FACILITATE A PHYSICIANS' PERFORMANCE OF INVASIVE THERAPEUTIC AND DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES BY FOLLOWING AORN STANDARDS AND CMS REGULATORY GUIDELINES.Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and / or ability required:Essential Job Functions Duties and ResponsibilitiesPreoperative DutiesPerforms the surgical scrubDons the OR attire and personal protective equipmentGathers, checks, and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure.Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/ solutions needed for the procedure.Performs the initial instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the circulator.Assists the team members with gowning and gloving.Assists with draping patient and establishing the sterile field.Participates in the TIME OUT with surgeon to verify site and patient identificationSecures tubing, cords, and other sterile accessories.Intraoperative DutiesPrepares and anticipates instrumentation for usage during the procedure.Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon during the procedure.Measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents, and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure.Holds retractors or instruments as directed for the surgeonSponges or suctions the operative siteApplies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleedersCuts suture material as directed by the surgeon.Coordinates the camera or changes instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon.Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure.Performs additional counts as necessary. Postoperative DutiesPrepares sterile dressings and/ or immobilization devices.Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriateCleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilizationAssists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of the room.Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient. As the second scrub:Assists with transferring the patient to the OR table.Monitors comfort of the patient and provides verbal and tactile reassurance to the patient.Assists in maintaining normothermiaAssists the anesthesia providerAssists with positioning the patient, using appropriate equipment and anatomical principles to avoid patient injury.Applies the electrosurgical grounding padAssists with applying tourniquets and monitors before the procedure beginsPerforms instrument, sharps, and sponge counts with the RN Assist prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.Anticipates additional supplies needed during the procedure.Keeps accurate records throughout the procedureProperly cares for specimensSecures dressings after incision closureUpdates and keeps accurate records of the surgeon's preferences. Infection ControlDemonstrates adherence to infection control policies as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practicesDemonstrates correct hand washing technique.Demonstrates knowledge of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and uses same in practice.Notifies the Infection Control Nurse of real or potential exposures. Risk Management & Safety ProgramDemonstrates adherence to risk management and safety policies and codes as evidenced by in-service attendance records and employee practices.Maintains a clean and safe environment for patient and co-workers.Follows all general safety rules.Notified the Safety Director and/or Risk Manager of incidents involving injury or having the potential for injury.Submits incident reports according to hospital policy. Requirements Educational ResponsibilitiesCompletes required careLearning modulesAttends mandatory Safety/NIMS in-services yearlyCompletes other required certifications or classes as necessary to perform the essential functions of the job.Attends unit meetings or reads meeting minutes 100% of the time.Qualifications:Education and/or Experience:High School DiplomaPreferred CNA certificationValid driver's licenseCertificates, Licensure, Registrations:Must be willing to attend or actively attending Surgical Technologist training programBasic Life Support (BLS) Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:Ability to work cooperatively and communicate effectively to maintain good working relationships with staff, healthcare providers, and patientsMust be capable of communicating clearly (reading, writing and speaking) in the English Language.Must be proficient in the operation of a personal computer with Microsoft Office and the InternetMust be capable of reading and comprehending complex healthcare laws and regulations.
