Software Engineer Intern (AI Infrastructure)
Who we areDeep Variance builds systems that improve the efficiency and performance of AI workloads by optimizing how they run on hardware. The focus is on reducing inference cost, improving throughput, and making large-scale AI systems more reliable through low-level systems innovation.Role OverviewThis summer internship focuses on bridging research and production. The work involves developing and validating research-driven optimizations for AI inference systems, and translating them into usable, production-ready components. The role requires strong systems thinking, experimentation, and close collaboration with both technical and product stakeholders.ResponsibilitiesWork closely with the R&D team to develop and implement research prototypes for optimizing AI inference workflowsEvaluate and validate system performance through benchmarking, profiling, and experimentationSupport product-oriented evaluation, logging, and observability for AI systemsCollaborate with the founding team to improve system usability, reliability, and output qualityParticipate in technical discussions, architecture reviews, and product planning sessionsEngage with external organizations to understand requirements and guide adoption of optimization solutionsWho should applyMaster’s students in Computer Science, Data Science, or related fieldsStrong interest in systems engineering, GPU computing, or AI infrastructureExperience with Python and/or C++ (CUDA or low-level systems experience is a plus)Comfortable working in research-driven, fast-paced environments with evolving requirementsStrict RequirementsMust be authorized to work under CPT during the internship periodMust return to academic study after the summer internshipOpen only to students from Indiana University Bloomington, Luddy School of Informatics, Computing and EngineeringCompensationCompensation will be determined based on scope and level of contribution
