Process Engineering Manager – Industrial Gases / Air Separation📍 Bethlehem, PA | Regional Travel RequiredAbout the RoleWe are seeking a highly experienced Process Engineering Manager to provide technical leadership for industrial gas and air separation projects across the region. Reporting to the VP of Engineering, this role leads a team of process engineers responsible for delivering cryogenic air separation and VPSA systems safely, efficiently, and on schedule—from proposal through commissioning and startup.This is a hands‑on leadership role for a seasoned process engineering professional with deep expertise in industrial gases, air separation technologies, and team development.Key ResponsibilitiesProvide overall technical direction and leadership for the Process Engineering departmentLead the design, optimization, and performance of world‑scale cryogenic air separation and VPSA plants supporting industrial gas applicationsManage daily activities of the process engineering and process systems teams, driving technical excellence and continuous improvementReview customer inquiries and evaluate process alternatives; perform technical and economic trade‑off analyses to select optimal solutionsPerform and oversee process simulations using tools such as UniSim and gPROMSDevelop and review Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Heat & Material Balances (H&MBs), pressure drop calculations, utility and power consumption estimates, and product recovery projectionsSize major air separation and VPSA equipment including distillation columns, heat exchangers, compressors, pumps, adsorption systems, tanks, and cooling systemsDevelop equipment lists, line sizing, material selection, data sheets, and specificationsParticipate in and lead P&ID development, HAZOPs, technical risk assessments, commissioning, startup, and performance testingReview vendor proposals, drawings, and documentation for compliance with design standards and project requirementsProvide ongoing technical support to operating plants, including troubleshooting and performance optimizationStay current on state‑of‑the‑art industrial gas technologies, process safety practices, and design methodologiesEstablish and improve department standards, best practices, tools, and proceduresLead people management responsibilities including hiring, training, mentoring, goal setting, and performance managementOccasionally represent the organization as a senior technical leader in industry forums and professional organizationsRequired QualificationsB.S. in Chemical Engineering10+ years of experience in cryogenic air separation within an industrial gas companyRequired experience with VPSA (Vacuum Pressure Swing Adsorption) air separation systemsExtensive experience developing and selecting process cycles and creating simulations using UniSim, gPROMS, or similar toolsStrong background in PFDs, H&MBs, equipment sizing, process specifications, line sizing, and utility calculationsDemonstrated ability to lead teams, manage priorities, and deliver results with minimal supervisionWillingness to travel to plant sites throughout the regionPreferred Qualifications15+ years in the cryogenic air separation or industrial gas industryExperience with non‑cryogenic adsorption air separation technologiesMaster’s degree in Chemical EngineeringAdvanced Process Control (APC) experienceForeign language capability (Spanish or Chinese)Why This RoleThis is a senior leadership opportunity to shape process engineering strategy and execution for complex industrial gas projects.
