Engagement Type: Independent Contractor – This is a 1099 independent contractor role. Our mission is to make science teaching safer, easier, and more inspiring for every educator.Position OverviewFlinn Scientific is seeking retired or soon-to-retire science teachers to serve as Science Lab Safety Trainers who visit schools and districts to deliver engaging, hands-on lab safety training and implementation support. In this flexible, contractor-based role, you will bring your years of classroom experience to help other educators strengthen their lab safety programs. Trainers conduct on-site safety sessions, lead live demonstrations, and assist schools in building the systems and culture needed to meet safety and compliance requirements.Comprehensive training is provided by Flinn Scientific. All new trainers complete a structured onboarding process, including in-person, on-site training at Flinn headquarters in Batavia, Illinois to prepare for field work. You do not need prior PD or consulting experience; we will equip you with all the tools, content, and confidence you need to succeed.If you are a true Flinn Fanatic, someone who loves science, believes in safe hands-on learning, and wants to stay connected to classrooms, you will fit right in. And yes, you will get Flinn gear: shirts, sweatshirts, socks, shoes, and more to wear proudly when you are out visiting schools.Key ResponsibilitiesDeliver on-site Flinn Lab Safety Training sessions for teachers and administrators (typically 1-day engagements).Lead interactive hazard analyses and demonstrations of common classroom labs (e.g., flame tests, oxidizer safety, chemical storage).Help schools develop or update Chemical Hygiene Plans and improve chemical inventory management.Conduct classroom and stockroom walkthroughs to identify risks and recommend corrective actions.Model best practices for chemical labeling, PPE use, and waste disposal.Represent Flinn Scientific with professionalism, enthusiasm, and the heart of a teacher.Provide feedback to Flinn’s Safety & Professional Services team to enhance training content and outreach.Travel requirements vary by assignment and may include overnight stays. All approved travel expenses will be reimbursed.QualificationsRetired or soon-to-retire science teacher, department chair, or district science lead, ideally with experience in chemistry, biology, or physical science.Passion for hands-on science and for helping other teachers create safer learning environments.Excellent communication and presentation skills; comfortable leading groups of educators.Willingness and ability to travel regionally or nationally for engagements.Strong organizational and follow-up skills.OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification - PreferredExperience working in lab or educational environments - PreferredPreferred ExperiencePrevious leadership in lab safety (e.g., Chemical Hygiene Officer, department safety coordinator).Experience conducting teacher professional development.Familiarity with Flinn Scientific’s products and safety resources.Compensation, Training and PerksCompensation ranges starting from $300 per day, based on location and experience. All travel expenses are fully covered. Trainers are hired as 1099 independent contractors and engagements are scheduled on a per diem basis.
