Mechanical Engineer

Mechanical Engineer (PE) – Job DescriptionAs a Licensed Professional Engineer (PE), you will play a key role in the design, analysis, and oversight of mechanical systems for architectural and engineering projects. This position requires strong technical expertise, leadership ability, and a commitment to mentoring junior staff while contributing to the overall success of the mechanical engineering department.Key ResponsibilitiesTechnical Leadership & Design OversightReview and approve HVAC heat load calculations and system designsApply and interpret applicable codes and standards, including ASHRAE, International Plumbing Code, and VA Technical Information Library (TIL)Guide and review use of design software (e.g., Trane Trace 3D Plus) for HVAC system sizing and documentationReview and mentor high-temperature piping stress analysis and design (e.g., AutoPIPE)Oversee plumbing system design and ensure compliance with local and national codesReview and coordinate mechanical and plumbing system layouts within Revit models and construction documentsUtilize and guide use of CAD tools (AutoCAD, Revit) for design and documentationCollaborate across disciplines (architectural, electrical, civil) to ensure coordinated project deliverySupport use of LiDAR scans within Revit or Autodesk ReCap environmentsReview and mark up drawings and documents using Bluebeam RevuAssist in the development and review of project narratives and technical documentationProject Support & CoordinationParticipate in design reviews and present models and technical solutions to stakeholdersWork closely with project managers to develop project schedules, budgets, and execution strategiesSupport preparation of project narratives, design criteria, and technical guidelinesConduct site visits, field investigations, and client coordination as requiredContribute to continuous improvement of drafting efficiency and documentation qualityTeam Leadership & DevelopmentMentor junior engineers, designers, EITs, and internsProvide technical guidance and support professional development within the teamCollaborate effectively with project managers and cross-functional teamsLead or contribute to internal training, presentations, and “lunch and learn” sessionsQualifications & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering (ABET-accredited) or related fieldActive Professional Engineer (PE) licenseMinimum of 4 years of relevant engineering experienceProficiency in design and drafting software (AutoCAD, Revit)Experience with HVAC load calculation software (e.g., Trane Trace 3D Plus)Strong understanding of mechanical systems, codes, and industry standardsSkills for SuccessStrong verbal and written communication skillsExcellent problem-solving and analytical abilitiesSolid understanding of engineering fundamentals and mathematicsSelf-motivated with a willingness to learn new technologiesAbility to interpret, apply, and mentor others on engineering codes and standardsExperience with VA TIL standards is a plus
