Cultural Property Security Officer (casual)

Job SummaryThe Cultural Property Security Officer is responsible for public safety, property protection, and maintaining order and secure conditions within the Museum and on the Museum grounds. Positions are available at the Museum of Art and the Center for Arctic Studies.Opening and securing the Museum daily, including walking patrols of the Museum galleries, administrative offices, and storage areas.Protecting the collections and facilities, supervising visitors, and monitoring general activities in the Museum.Providing assistance to visitors, patrons, and staff in person, via telephone, or through electronic mail, and ensuring good public relations between the College and local communities.Becoming thoroughly familiar with all building systems (intrusion alarms, fire panels, HVAC) and the unique characteristics of the Museum building.Diffusing situations with tactful and appropriate communication skills and explaining department and Museum procedures to the public as needed.Taking necessary measures to prevent crime and safeguard the lives and property of visitors and staff, and investigating incidents, crimes and complaints committed against the Museum while observing established regulations and policy.Hourly rate: $18.40 per hour.Education / Skills RequirementsHigh school diploma or GED equivalent.Some college coursework (preferred).Strong customer service and communication skills.Ability to work under pressure in a calm manner when stressful circumstances occur.Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports, correspondences, and emails.Problem-solving: ability to work with a wide variety of people in varying situations, identify issues, generate solutions and make sound decisions.Detail-oriented: high level of attention to detail to ensure accuracy of written incident reports, logs, and forms.Experience RequirementsPrevious experience working in a customer-facing role.CPR and AED certification or willingness to obtain certification upon hire.Standard Work Days and HoursThe Museum requires year-round, 7 days a week security coverage; shifts are scheduled between 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 p.m.This is a casual, part-time, non-benefit eligible position working 12–19 hours per week. It is an on-site role; candidates must be able to work in person on Bowdoin College Campus.Although the position is intended to be flexible, officers may be assigned to other shifts including weekend hours and blackout days.
