Expanded Function Dental AssistantEssential Duties and Responsibilities Consistently demonstrate knowledge and skill related to the following expanded function dutiesPlacing and removing rubber dams, matrices, and wedgesPlacing cavity liners and basesFabricating and cementing provisional restorations for crowns and bridgesPlacing, condensing, carving, and contouring amalgam restorationsPlacing and finishing composite restorationsPlacing sealants and applying fluoridePerforming coronal polishingTaking impressions of teeth for study models, diagnostic casts or athletic appliancesRemoving sutures and providing post-surgical patient managementAdjusting removable appliances and provisional restorationsDiscussing treatment plans with patientsMaintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societiesDental Assistant Duties:Prepare treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocolsPrepare patient for dental treatment by welcoming, comforting, seating, and draping patient and documenting check-in updates in electronic dental recordDocument dental care services by charting in patient electronic recordsProvide information to patients and employees by answering questions and requests Provide materials by selecting, mixing, and placing materials on instruments for dentist's accessProvide instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist's access; suctioning; passing instruments using four handed techniqueProvide diagnostic information by exposing digital radiographic studies; pouring and trimming study castsClean and polish removable appliances; fabricate and polish temporary restorationsConserve dental resources by using equipment and supplies as neededManage patient flow and triage walk insEnsure operation of dental equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; requesting and following up with repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; learning new equipment and techniques; recording maintenance in logsEnsure all lab and clinic supplies are ordered in a timely manner; maintain dental supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level; anticipate needed supplies; place and expedite orders for supplies; verify receipt of suppliesDocument receipt of dental supplies, dental lab work, repairs, and additional servicesEducate patients by giving post-operative instructionsCommunicate with Receptionist time /date /procedure of next appointment by documenting next visit information in electronic dental recordMaintain dental lab work area, keep cases in alphabetical order, and track turnaround times for lab cases; Communicate with lab when a case is overdue; Communicate with receptionist when patient cases are not delivered in a timely mannerThe information contained herein is not intended to be an all-inclusive list of the duties and responsibilities of the job.
