Aquatics Specialist - Extra-Help (Parks & Recreation)

About the Opportunity The City of Ventura is seeking an energetic, safety‑minded, and customer‑focused individual to join our Aquatics team as a part‑time Aquatics Specialist. This position will play an important role in supporting the daily operations of the City’s aquatics programs and facilities while helping provide a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment for Ventura residents. It is a temporary part‑time “extra help” at‑will position that may require working a rotational schedule, including weekends. What You’ll Do: Coordinating and scheduling swimming lessons, lifeguards, instructors, and support staff. Assisting with staff training and day‑to‑day aquatics operations. Enforcing pool and facility safety rules and regulations. Monitoring facility conditions and identifying or correcting potential safety hazards. Assisting with routine pool maintenance, clean‑up activities, and chemical treatment when needed. Maintaining records, reports, and facility usage information. Overseeing fee collection and assisting with basic cash handling responsibilities. Providing excellent customer service and maintaining positive relationships with patrons, community groups, and staff. Responding appropriately and independently during emergency situations. Performing other related duties as needed. Schedule Rotation schedule may include weekends. Extra help positions work less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July1–June30) subject to budget availability and agency needs. Minimum Qualifications – Required A combination of education, training and experience equivalent to successful completion of a swim test and six seasons of aquatics experience is required. Must be age 18 at time of appointment. Licenses / Certificates License: Depending on assignment, possession of a valid California ClassC driver’s license may be required. Certificates (must possess at appointment): American Red Cross Lifeguarding with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid Certification American Red Cross Water Safety Instructor Certification Public Safety First Aid and CPR course completion that meets California Code of Regulations, Title22, Division9, Chapter1.5 Bloodborne Pathogens Training that meets California Code of Regulations, Title8, Section5193 Must obtain within 6 months of appointment: American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certification. Compensation Pay $16.90 – $22.90 hourly (DOE). This is a temporary part‑time “extra help” at‑will position. Extra help positions work less than 1,000 hours per fiscal year (July1–June30).
