The Pulp Mill Superintendent coaches assistant superintendents, shift supervisors, and team members to meet safety, quality, production, and all other key performance indicators of the mill facility. The Pulp Mill Superintendent communicates performance expectations to team members, monitors production demands, supervises machine productivity and quality, while managing personnel daily.MAJOR JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:Business ExcellencePromote safety and environmental culture and mindset while meeting and exceeding customer's needs with minimal incidentsSupport the development of the annual strategic production plan for the annual cycleDevelop the tactical mill production plans supporting the annual strategy by proactively capturing pertinent customer and market data, identifying cost savings opportunities, and ensuring consistent pulp ad fiber supply to achieve production targetsOversee the day-to-day operations of the pulp mill ensuring that the mill meets company and customer goals and targets for safety, quality, production, on-time delivery, and costEnforce and model plant safety regulations and housekeeping practices and encourage employees to become safety-consciousManage environmental compliance, safety, quality, production and production costs for paper machine and stock prep areasMake recommendations to improve safety, environmental compliance, and health of the entire facilityMaintain effective departmental quality proceduresSupervise employees to accomplish safety, quality, productivity, and efficiency goalsDevelop and manage the pulp mill budget and manage spending to the budget (e.g. expenditures for chemicals, refiner plates, screen baskets)Build effective relationships with all internal departments to produce a superior product and drive operational efficiencyControl load factors and workflow to ensure maximum use of available capacity and effective use of labor, tools, and equipmentMaintain department shop floor metrics, visual controls, and continuous improvement methods on the manufacturing floorCoordinate, plan, and schedule mill maintenance repairs, outages, and lockouts in a timely manner to ensure customer and manufacturing needs are met (e.g. paper machines, stock prep areas)Ensure all maintenance work is completed in a timely mannerPeople and CultureManage, supervise and coach manufacturing employees through mentoring, training, performance reviews, and disciplinary actionsSet an example for others by displaying a sense of urgency, care, compassion and passion to be the bestCommunicate effectively with all functional areas of the mill to ensure all production needs are successfully achievedPartner with and support direct reports to ensure efficient operations; collaboratively troubleshoot and resolve issues as necessaryPromote positive employee relations and interdepartmental communication and collaborationProvide recommendations on disciplinary action and recommend potential improvements, as necessaryStrive for continuous improvement for the entire facility as a collective teamTECHNICAL SKILLS:Microsoft Office - Excel, Outlook, WordAbility to quickly learn programs and software used in pulp mill facilityPulp/Paper industry and product knowledgePulp Mill Machinery:Digesters batch/continuous/carbonateWashers Vacuum Drum/Brown Stock Diffuser/Chemi WasherPost-washing equipment refining/screeningMC/Thick Stock PumpSafety acumenEXPERIENCE / EDUCATION:Required: 10+ years of pulp/paper mill experienceRequired: 5+ years of supervisory experience in a manufacturing environmentPreferred: Leadership training and certifications (e.g. supervisory workshops, management development courses)Required: High School diploma or G.E.D.Preferred: Bachelor's degreeCandidates are required to undergo a drug screening after receiving a conditional job offer, but before starting employment.
