Quality Engineer
Position SummaryThe Quality Engineer oversees all quality-related functions within a welding and steel fabrication operation. This role ensures fabricated components meet or exceed customer specifications, industry standards (AWS, ASME, ISO, AISC, etc.), and internal quality requirements.The position supports production through technical expertise in welding, materials, and fabrication processes, while driving continuous improvement and maintaining product integrity.Note: This role does not have direct reports or people-management responsibilities.Key ResponsibilitiesQuality Systems & ComplianceDevelop, implement, and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS)Ensure compliance with:ISO 9001AWS D1.1 / D1.6ASMEAISC standardsMaintain certifications and compliance documentationLead internal and external auditsCoordinate corrective actions and follow-up activitiesWelding & Fabrication Quality OversightOversee welding procedure development, qualification, and documentationEnsure welder qualification/requalification per AWS, ASME, and customer-specific requirementsReview:Fabrication drawingsWeld symbolsTolerancesBuild requirementsValidate:Material certificationsHeat numbersMaterial traceabilityInspection & TestingManage:Dimensional inspectionsWeld inspectionsNDE testingEnsure calibration and maintenance of inspection equipmentConduct root-cause analysis for:Weld defectsMaterial issuesNonconforming componentsApprove final products before shipmentCollaboration & Technical SupportProvide technical guidance to:WeldersFabricatorsSupervisorsEngineering teamsParticipate in pre-production planningCommunicate quality requirements with customers, suppliers, and internal stakeholdersRequired QualificationsMust-Haves5+ years of experience in:Quality managementWelding engineeringSteel fabrication quality rolesStrong knowledge of welding codes, specifically:AWS D1.1Experience with steel fabrication processes including:CuttingFormingMachiningAssemblyAbility to read:Fabrication drawingsWeld symbolsGD&TExperience performing or supervising NDEStrong problem-solving skillsFamiliarity with:5 WhyFishbone AnalysisDMAICPreferred Qualifications (Nice to Have)Certified Welding Inspector (CWI)Certified Welding Supervisor (CWS)Familiarity with ISO 9001 and other QMS requirementsExperience with structural steel standards (AISC)Background in lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiativesSpanish-speaking ability preferredKey CompetenciesHigh attention to detailStrong communication and documentation skillsAnalytical and practical problem-solving approachAbility to work independently in a fast-paced fabrication environmentStrong collaboration and shop-floor influence
