Controller
Position Overview:The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all financial operations of Varney Incorporated, a 100% employee-owned MEP subcontractor specializing in Mechanical HVAC, Plumbing, and Electrical services. This role will manage accounting functions, ensure the integrity of financial data, provide timely and accurate financial reporting, and support the executive team in financial decision-making.Key Responsibilities:1. Financials Management and Reporting:Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in compliance with GAAP.Develop and monitor company financial performance indicators and provide actionable insights to management.Ensure timely and accurate processing of payroll, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities.Lead the annual budgeting and forecasting processes.Analyze variances and provide explanations for significant deviations from budget or prior periods.Ensure compliance with internal financial controls and identify opportunities for improvement.2. Tax and Regulatory Compliance:Oversee the preparation and submission of local, state, and federal tax filings.Ensure compliance with employee ownership reporting requirements, including ESOP accounting and filings.Stay updated on tax law changes and recommend strategies to optimize tax position.3. Cash Flow Management:Manage cash flow by monitoring cash balances, forecasting future needs, and coordinating banking activities.Oversee banking relationships and negotiate favorable terms for financing when necessary.Ensure accurate and timely billing and collections.4. Audit and Internal Controls:Serve as the primary contact for external auditors during the annual audit process.Establish and maintain effective internal control systems to safeguard company assets.Regularly review financial processes for efficiency and accuracy.5. Leadership and Team Development:Supervise and mentor the accounting team, fostering a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.Provide training and development opportunities for staff to enhance skill levels and performance.Collaborate with other department heads to improve financial literacy within the organization.6. Strategic Financial Planning:Participate in strategic planning initiatives and provide financial expertise to support the company's goals.Evaluate capital expenditure requests and assist in financial modeling for new projects or investments.Support the leadership team in evaluating mergers, acquisitions, or other expansion opportunities.7. Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP):Administer the financial aspects of the ESOP, including valuation, compliance, and distributions.Ensure employees understand the ESOP and how it contributes to the company’s overall financial health.Qualifications:• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, or Finance; CPA or CMA designation preferred.• Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive experience in accounting or finance, with at least 3-5 years in a senior financial management role.• Strong understanding of GAAP and tax regulations related to construction and employee-owned companies.• Experience in the construction or subcontracting industry is a plus.• Proven ability to manage a team, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to present financial information clearly to non-financial stakeholders.• Strong proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Foundation, Viewpoint, or similar) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.Key Competencies:• Analytical thinking and attention to detail• Problem-solving and decision-making abilities• Leadership and team management skills• Strong ethical standards and integrity• Adaptability and flexibility in a dynamic work environmentWorking Conditions:
