Position Summary
Physical Education / Health / Driver’s Education Department Chair at Glenbard North
Act as Department Chair and as a classroom teacher potentially split between Driver’s Education, Health, and PE (for a combined total of 1.0 FTE)
Responsible for the leadership, administration, organization, and evaluation of all departmental programs for grades 9-12
Qualifications
Current PEL with an endorsement in Safety & Driver Education, PE, and General Administration, Teacher-Leader, or Principal endorsement; Health endorsement, a plus
Master’s Degree
Prior teaching and leadership experience
Dynamic leadership qualities that build strong relationships with students and staff
Clear communication skills (both written and oral)
Qualified evaluator in Illinois (preferred)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP
Establish and promote high standards and expectations for academic performance consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school and district. This will include, but is not limited to:
Provide instructional leadership for the department
Coordinator and supervise department curriculum development and assist in program evaluations
Conduct licensed staff member evaluations which focus on professional practice and student growth
Identify staff needs related to the improvement of instruction thru professional development
Represent the department in recommending changes in instructional materials and/or the addition of new courses
Conduct department meetings on a regular basis
DEPARTMENT MANAGEMENT
Organize, manage, evaluate, and supervise effective and clear procedures for the operation and functioning of the department consistent with the philosophy, mission, values and goals of the school and district. This will include but is not limited to:
Maintain appropriate supervision of staff
Maintain an inventory of capital equipment, materials and supplies
Prepare the annual departmental budget and administer said budget
Convey to the members of the department the deliberations of the Instructional Council
Aid the Guidance Department in the proper placement of students
STAFFING
As needed, organize and manage efforts to recruit and retain student enrollment
Participate in the building sectioning and staffing process
Assist in the selection of new teachers and the establishment of teaching assignments within the Department
Assist in the orientation of new teachers
Screen student teachers and assign them to appropriate staff members
Assist substitute teachers as needed to support student outcomes
Supervise and evaluate non-licensed staff when applicable
BUILDING LEADERSHIP
Serve in an advisory capacity to the Principal as a member of the Instructional Council
Convey to the Principal the challenges identified by departmental staff
PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Meet with the Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and other District Staff as requested
As needed, assist in the establishment of summer school course offerings and the assignment of summer school staff
Participate in articulation activities with the associate elementary school districts
Represent the department and discipline at community and evening events
Attend Building and District meetings as requested
Maintain the highest level of ethical and professional demeanor with students and staff consistent with the Sexual Harassment, Equal Educational Opportunity, Ethics, Use of Electronic Media, and other appropriate policies of the District.

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as correspondence, surveys, and electronic media
Ability to write reports and other professional communications
Ability to present information effectively and to respond to questions from individuals and groups
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community members
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form
Ability to complete mathematical operations and apply concepts of basic mathematics
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists
Ability to maintain current job skills as directed, especially in technology-related activities
Ability to perform essential duties with an awareness of school district requirements and School Board policies

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. In addition, the ability to withstand long-term use of video display terminals (VDT) is required.
The employee may occasionally lift up to 30 pounds such as reference books.
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
The pace of work tasks would be considered as fast.
Work is usually conducted at one job site, however, on occasion, this employee will be required to attend meetings, conferences, or workshops and events at other sites as assigned.
