Salary : $53,774.00 - $55,947.00 Annually Location : 615 Patrick Henry Drive, Blacksburg, VA Job Type: Full Time Job Number: SeniorP Supervisor 060526 FT Department: Recreation Division: Recreation - Senior Opening Date: 05/06/2026 Closing Date: 6/5/2026 5:00 PM Eastern General Definition of Work The Senior Programs Supervisor develops, plans, leads, and supervises the programs aimed at meeting the needs of the senior citizens of the community for social, physical, and recreational activities. Supervision is exercised over the divisions' part-time staff. The work is performed under the direction of the Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. Coordinates and oversees the planning, development, implementation, and supervision of recreational programs and activities for the Senior divisionOversees and supervises the activities of staff and volunteers; selects, trains, directs, schedules, and monitors dutiesMakes recommendations on new senior programs or modification of existing programs to meet community needsPrepares marketing materials, such as course descriptions, program brochures, newsletters, and announcements; uses social media and other forums to maximize community outreach and participationPlans, supervises, and makes arrangements for senior programs, which could include: finding instructors and speakers, making trip arrangements, and securing materials needed for the programsConduct regular evaluation of the Seniors Programs with the aim of increasing participation and participant satisfactionConduct day trips, multi-day trips, and general programmingMaintains records on program activities, attendance, and other pertinent informationPerforms other duties as assigned Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of the unique needs of the senior populationKnowledge of activities that would be attractive to the senior populationAbility to communicate effectively with people of all agesKnowledge in planning, supervising, and conducting senior programsAbility to drive a 15-passenger vanKnowledge in composing newsletters, brochures, and news releasesKnowledge of methods, techniques, principles, and procedures used in planning, development, and administration of senior programsKnowledge of common recreational and social needs of various age groupsKnowledge of principles of supervision, training, and performance evaluationKnowledge of principles and practices of budget developmentKnowledge of office procedures, methods, and equipment, including computers and applicable software applications such as word processing, spreadsheets, and databasesPossess problem-solving skills and time managementAbility to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writingMust be highly organized and have the ability to prioritize projects while handling multiple projects at the same time, and continually grow the program Education and ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED certification is requiredBachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in Recreation Therapy, Recreation Administration, or a related fieldThree to five years of experience in recreation programs development and implementation, including leading or supervising staff Special RequirementsValid Virginia driver's license with a satisfactory driving record.Ability to obtain a Class C Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within six months of employmentFirst aid and CPR with AED certification required or the ability to obtain within 60 days of employmentPosition will be required to pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening and will be included in the random drug and alcohol screening program Physical RequirementsWork is performed in office and outdoor environmentsTravel to different locationsMay be exposed to inclement weather conditionsFrequent walking and standingThe ability to lift/carry objects up to 40 pounds, stoop and crouch, reach and handlePosition may require sitting for prolonged periods of timeOccasional driving is required to attend eventsExtended work hours may be required to include evenings and weekends The Town of Blacksburg offers a wide range of benefits.
