About the Firm: Social Impact Accounting is an Oregon-based accounting firm serving approximately 50 small nonprofit client organizations, with a primary focus on 501(c)(3) Public Charities and 501(c)(4) Social Welfare Organizations. We provide full-service, GAAP-informed accounting under a fixed monthly retainer model — including general ledger maintenance, payroll, AP/AR, Form 990 preparation, audit support, board training, budget development, and grant management.We operate 100% remotely and paper-free. Our tech stack includes QuickBooks Online for Accountants, Google Workspace, Rippling Payroll, Bill.com, and a custom system of online forms and Apps Script integrations that feeds our reporting infrastructure.Position SummaryThe Senior Accountant / Client Lead is a direct-service role responsible for the full scope of services we deliver to assigned clients. The position carries primary responsibility for client relationships, accounting accuracy, compliance, and reporting across our portfolio of nonprofit clients. Two staff direct reports support most functions; this role supports and coordinates their work and is accountable for client outcomes. Day-to-day operational autonomy is high. Reports to the Lead Accountant (Firm Owner).Compensation and BenefitsBase salary: $105,000Retirement: 10% employer contribution to 401(k), no employee match requiredFlex benefit: $2,750 annually (employee-directed health/wellness/professional development)Insurance: Long-term disability and life insurance, employer-paidSchedule: Full-time, fully remote, US-based (any state)Core ResponsibilitiesClient Service & Account LeadershipServe as primary point of contact for an assigned portfolio of nonprofit clients.Manage the full monthly close cycle, including reconciliations, journal entries, accruals, and review of all general ledger activity.Deliver monthly financial reporting packages: organization-level reports, program- and grant-specific reports, and budget-to-actual analysis.Direct the work of two support staff who handle transaction processing, form intake, routine reconciliation, and bookkeeping tasks.Build client capacity through training and clear communication on GAAP, audit readiness, IRS reporting, grant restriction management, and revenue recognition.Tax & Regulatory CompliancePrepare and file Form 990, 990-EZ, and 990-N for client portfolio.Manage state nonprofit compliance reporting: OR CT-12 filings, Department of Justice registration, state employment filings, and workers' compensation reporting.Respond to regulatory notices (IRS, state DOR, Employment Department, DOJ) and develop client response strategies.Maintain awareness of nonprofit-specific tax issues, including UBIT, public support test, lobbying limits, political limits, donor substantiation, and 1099 reporting.Accounting OperationsMaintain the digital master financial record for each client (corporate documents, exemption letters, contracts, payroll records, transaction substantiation).Run full-service payroll on Rippling, including multi-state filings, W-2/W-3, and 1099/1098 issuance.Oversee AP through Bill.com; manage AR tracking; analyze grant and contract awards for revenue recognition treatment.Coordinate with third-party auditors as primary firm/client liaison during client audit engagements.Required QualificationsOne of the following: active EA, active CPA, or 5+ years of direct nonprofit senior accounting experience.Proficiency with QuickBooks Online (QuickBooks Online for Accountants strongly preferred).Working knowledge of Form 990 and nonprofit federal tax compliance.Strong Google Workspace skills, including Google Sheets formula construction (FILTER, ARRAYFORMULA, QUERY, or equivalent).Ability to work independently in a remote environment with structured systems and minimal daily supervision.Clear written and verbal communication; ability to explain technical concepts to non-accountant clients; excellent interpersonal skills.Preferred QualificationsActive EA or CPA credential.Demonstrated experience with full-cycle GAAP accounting on an accrual basis for nonprofits.Prior client-facing or client-lead experience in a public accounting firm.Experience with Bill.com, Rippling, QuickBooks Online, and modern nonprofit tech stacks.Familiarity with the Oregon nonprofit regulatory environment (DOJ CT-12, state employment, workers' compensation).Experience supervising junior accounting staff.Comfort with light scripting or automation (Google Apps Script, basic Python) is a plus but not required.What This Role Is NotThis is not a controller or CFO advisory role with a single client; it is a portfolio role serving multiple clients under a defined service model. Our service scope is intentionally bounded. We do not perform client office clerical work, make management decisions for clients, provide collection services, perform audit or attestation services, or operate outside our proscribed tech stack.
