An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.Preferred QualificationsJob Description SummaryThe University of South Alabama’s Central Housing department is seeking to hire three Maintenance Mechanic II’s. Interested candidates should apply to be considered. Essential FunctionsPerforms a wide variety of residential facility maintenance, repair, and preventive services across university residence halls, apartments, and common areas, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, lock and door hardware, and general building systems.Accompanies subcontractors on site to perform needed repairs.Work is performed under the general supervision of a higher-level technical or supervisory employee through inspection and work order completion.Participates in an on-call rotation for emergency response to campus facilities as needed.Considered essential personnel and may be required to report to work when the University is closed for emergencies or inclement weather.Maintains and repairs residence halls, apartments, offices, and common areas to ensure a safe, clean, and well-functioning living environment for residents.Responds to work orders, emergency calls, and routine service requests from students and housing staff in a timely and professional manner.Performs preventative maintenance, repair, and routine inspections of building systems, interior and exterior, including plumbing, electrical, HVAC , doors, locks, appliances, and safety equipment.Diagnoses problems and performs repairs using proper trade practices, tools, and materials.Installs, maintains, and repairs plumbing fixtures, including sinks, toilets, valves, drains, and water lines.Performs electrical repairs, including lighting, outlets, switches, and related components.Performs carpentry, sheet rock, paint, and finish work needed to maintain student rooms and common areas.Repairs and maintains doors, frames, locksets, and access hardware to support building security.Assists with room preparation, furniture installation, and space readiness for student move-in, move-out, and summer transitions.Escorts and monitors contractors and vendors performing work in residential facilities.Maintains a clean and safe work area and ensure all tools and materials are properly stored.May be required to operate a university vehicle or golf cart to travel between buildings, transport equipment, or support campus operations.Uses power tools, ladders, lifts, and university vehicles safely and in compliance with safety policies.Transports furniture, equipment, and materials between warehouses and residential buildings as needed.Maintains inventory of maintenance supplies and emergency call-out materials.Communicates effectively with residents, housing staff, and campus partners to resolve maintenance concerns.Follows all University and Housing safety, environmental, and operational procedures.Participates in training, staff meetings, and professional development activities.Works productively both independently or as part of a team as required.Performs routine inspections of all Housing facilities, interior and exterior to identify and report repair needs.Regular and prompt attendance.Ability to work schedule as defined and overtime as required during peak periods such as move-in and move-out.Related duties as required.Posting InformationNumber of Vacancies 3Position End Date (if temporary)Job Open Date 04/10/2026Job Close DateOpen Until Filled YesSpecial Instructions to ApplicantsWorking Days Monday - FridayWorking Hours 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.Job Location Main CampusFull-time or Part-Time Full TimeRegular or Temporary Regular
