Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship
Lead and modernize a critical function within Development and Alumni Relations at a moment of institutional momentum and growth.Howard University is seeking its next Director of Donor Relations and Stewardship.Reporting to the Executive Director, Development Operations & Annual Giving, the Director will serve as the University’s lead stewardship strategist, responsible for building a proactive, donor-centric program that strengthens engagement, drives retention, and reinforces trust.This role will establish the systems, standards, and cross-functional alignment needed to support long-term fundraising success while enhancing the donor experience across all giving levels.This leader will bring both strategic vision and operational discipline to build a scalable, high-performing program that supports Howard’s continued impact.Key ResponsibilitiesLead the redesign and implementation of a comprehensive, tiered donor stewardship program.Establish measurable goals and systems that improve reporting, retention, and donor engagement.Oversee scholarship stewardship, donor communications, and impact reporting across all giving levels.Partner across departments to ensure alignment, accountability, and compliance with donor intent.Build and develop a high-performing team focused on execution, consistency, and continuous improvement.Key QualificationsMinimum of seven years of progressive experience in donor relations, stewardship, advancement operations, or related fundraising leadership roles, including supervisory responsibilityDemonstrated success building, modernizing, or transforming stewardship and donor relations programs within higher education or complex nonprofit environmentsStrong understanding of donor intent, restricted funds, scholarship administration, and stewardship compliance practicesExcellent leadership, communication, organizational, and cross-functional collaboration skills, with the ability to drive measurable outcomes in a complex institutionProficiency with CRM and reporting systems, preferably Raiser’s Edge, along with strong analytical and operational management capabilitiesCompensationThe salary range for this role is $120,000-$135,000.Why Howard?
