Human Resources Specialist: Leave, Benefits & Wellness

HR SpecialistThe major function of this position is: The HR Specialist oversees the end-to-end lifecycle of employee health and absence. This includes the technical administration of FMLA, ADA, and Workers' Compensation, as well as the creative development of company-wide wellness initiatives. You will ensure the company remains compliant with all labor laws while fostering a culture that prioritizes physical, mental, and financial health. Pay Range: $55,000 - $70,000 Location: Peoria, Il. Work schedule - Hybrid (4 days in office/1 day remote) The essential responsibilities of this position are: Oversee and administer all leave requests and accommodations requiring specialized attention, including those arising under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), and state or local leave laws. Manage the full lifecycle of Short-Term and Long-Term Disability plans, ensuring accurate documentation and timely communication with all stakeholders. Lead the ADA interactive process to identify and implement reasonable accommodations, maintaining detailed records and ensuring legal compliance. Manage end-to-end Workers' Compensation claims, acting as the primary liaison between injured employees, medical providers, and insurance carriers. Coordinate "Return to Work" programs for employees transitioning back from medical or disability leave, ensuring their needs are met while maintaining operational efficiency. Design and execute a comprehensive company wellness strategy that addresses physical, mental, and financial health through workshops, screenings, and engagement challenges. Oversee relationships with wellness vendors, gym partners, and Employee Assistance Program (EAP) providers to ensure high-quality service and program value. Analyze leave and claims data to identify trends, recommending preventative wellness or safety interventions to mitigate future risks. Provide Human Resources support for recruiting and talent acquisition, assisting in sourcing and screening candidates who align with the company's "Total Rewards" culture. Educate employees and managers on benefits eligibility, leave policies, and wellness resources to ensure a high level of awareness regarding company programs. Maintain absolute confidentiality and discretion when handling sensitive medical information and personal employee data. Stay current on evolving federal, state, and local labor laws to ensure all company policies and practices remain fully compliant. Maintain accurate records in the HRIS and prepare reports on leave trends or benefits utilization. Assist with the delivery of employee orientations and on-boarding programs. Perform other work-related tasks as requested or required. Desired Qualifications: 35 years of progressive experience in Human Resources, with at least 2 years specifically dedicated to Leave Administration, Benefits, or Risk Management Deep functional knowledge of FMLA, ADA, GINA, and HIPAA, including the ability to navigate the "interactive process" and medical certifications. Proficiency in managing Workers' Compensation workflows, from initial "First Report of Injury" to coordinating "Modified Duty" or "Return to Work" plans. Desired Skills: Proficiency in HRIS platforms (e.g., Workday) Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) is required. High emotional intelligence, discretion with confidential data, and a "calm in the storm" strength. Strong interpersonal skills to act as a supportive advocate for employees while maintaining professional boundaries and confidentiality. Ability to build and market Wellness Initiatives (e.g., EAP awareness, step challenges, or mental health workshops, etc.) that drive high employee engagement. Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written Ability to work independently and/or take direction as needed Strong organizational skills and attention to detail Strong follow-up skills Flexible and adaptable with the ability to work under pressure.
