Utility Worker

JOB Under the immediate supervision of an Operation Manager or Field Supervisor, this is skilled and semi-skilled maintenance work attending to a variety of repairs and janitorial tasks to ensure that the facilities and equipment are both clean and usable. The Utility Worker is responsible for various activities such as repairs, maintenance, and cleaning aimed at maintaining the cleanliness and usability of facilities and equipment. An employee in this class usually works within and around a facility but may also be assigned to provide assistance with interior cleaning assignments and work off-site at other locations. Work is conducted on the grounds and other infrastructures of a facility to ensure that the equipment and facility are clean and accessible. Work is performed in accordance with established guidelines. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES Replaces lights bulbs, ceiling tiles, filters, batteries. Conducts routine maintenance, painting, and minor repairs such as patching holes, fixing a drain, changing ceiling tiles, light bulbs, and changing door locks. Performs a variety of cleaning tasks in the interior and exterior of facilities and other infrastructure facilities, such as bus shelters/stops, storage spaces including sweeping, blowing, trash removal, power wash, mopping, and sanitizing. Cleans (in/out) all vehicles relating to the operations to include power washing, vacuuming, wiping down and sanitizing all touch surfaces. Spots clean, tidy any unit/vehicle taken off the road due to emergencies and or rest periods. Maintains the grounds (e.g. cutting grass or shrubs, power washing windows and exterior of buildings, sweeps and scrubs walkways and curbs, trash removal). Maintains adequate stock levels for cleaning supplies and any maintenance equipment. Ensures the safe handling & storage of volatile cleaning liquids, gasoline, and other chemicals. Conducts preventive maintenance and safety checks on all maintenance equipment, including power washers, weed whackers, vacuums, and other tools. Performs other related duties as assigned. SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of safe cleaning practices and procedures. Knowledge of cleaning equipment and techniques. Knowledge of basic computer operations, such as email and work orders. Knowledge of materials, methods, and tools involved in maintenance and building repair. Skill in manual dexterity. Skill in the use of tools and equipment used for maintenance and repairs. Ability to follow both verbal and written instructions. Ability to read and write. Ability to communicate effectively by radio when necessary. Ability to be dependable and reliable. Ability to pay attention to details. Ability to operate landscaping equipment including lawnmower, blower, pressure washer, chainsaws, and other related tools. Ability to exert physical strength with maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull or carry objects. Ability to respond to work requests in a timely manner. Ability to be courteous in a manner that supports the organization. Ability to adapt to changing work conditions and policies. FACTOR 2- SUPERVISORY CONTROLS Assignments are issued by the supervisor responsible for providing lead direction to other workers including scheduling, outlining, and coordinating work. Work is performed independently based on established procedures. Incumbent carries out daily routine tasks. Work is reviewed for completeness and adherence to established guidelines. FACTOR 3- GUIDELINES Guidelines include federal and local rules and regulations, standard operating procedures, department policies and procedures, and operation manuals. Performs routine maintenance/cleaning inside/outside building/facility grounds. FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY Work is recurring involving a wide range of tasks including general maintenance repairs, that do not require a licensed or specialized technician/contractor – reporting drywall, painting, repairing doors, changing lights, installing ceiling tiles, loading and unloading. It also involves working with cleaning solvents, weed whackers, pressure washers, power drills, blowers, etc. FACTOR 5- SCOPE AND EFFECT The purpose of work is to handle a variety of manual tasks in and around a facility to ensure that the equipment and facility are clean and accessible. Seeks ways of doing things better using resources and skills in an innovative manner and to contribute, regardless of responsibilities, to achieve common goals. FACTOR - PERSONAL CONTACTS Contacts are supervisors and co-workers within the department, contractors, and vendors carrying out professional facility work. FACTOR 7- PURPOSE OF CONTACTS Contacts are made to carry out work within the facility and to determine the needs or issues related to the work. FACTOR 8- PHYSICAL DEMANDS Work involves considerable physical exertion and requires bending, crouching, and kneeling (possibly in confined spaces above ceiling). Pushing and pulling of equipment and tools, reaching in all directions, and prolonged periods of standing and walking. Lifting, carrying, and balancing objects of varying weight. Travel to off-site locations may be required. FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT Work is performed indoors and outdoors on the grounds of the facility and off-site at other infrastructures with constant exposure to dirt, dust, garbage grease, occasional adverse weather/temperature variances, hot and confined areas, loud noises, occasional exposure to hazardous or caustic chemicals and wet slippery surfaces and heights. It is essential to wear appropriate safety gear, including goggles, boots, gloves, masks, and earplugs, as needed depending on the nature of the work and in compliance with safety protocols.
