Position SummaryThe Boat Captain is responsible for the safe, professional, and efficient operation of marine vessels supporting Klawock Island Ventures (KIV) tourism and excursion activities. This role ensures compliance with all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), state, and company regulations while delivering an exceptional and culturally respectful guest experience. The Captain oversees vessel safety, crew coordination, navigation, and maintenance while upholding KIV's commitment to safety, operational excellence, and authentic Alaska experiences.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesSafely operate and navigate vessels in accordance with USCG regulations, maritime law, and company policiesEnsure the safety of passengers, crew, and vessel at all timesConduct required safety briefings for guests and crew prior to departureMonitor weather, tides, and marine conditions to determine trip feasibility and route adjustmentsMaintain current vessel logs, inspection records, and required regulatory documentationOversee vessel cleanliness, readiness, fueling, and routine maintenance checksCoordinate with dock staff, tour operators, and excursion managers to ensure timely departures and returnsSupervise and direct assigned crew members; provide coaching and ensure adherence to safety protocolsRespond appropriately and calmly in emergency situationsSupport guest engagement by providing knowledgeable commentary about local wildlife, geography, and cultural history when appropriateReport maintenance needs, safety concerns, and operational issues promptlyParticipate in pre-season vessel preparation and post-season winterization as assignedPromote a positive, team-oriented work environmentPhysical Requirements & Work EnvironmentAbility to work outdoors in variable and often inclement Southeast Alaska weather conditionsAbility to stand for extended periods and move safely about a vessel in motionAbility to lift and carry up to 50 poundsMust be able to board and disembark vessels safely and assist passengers when neededWork schedule may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays during peak seasonQualificationsValid USCG Captain's License appropriate for vessel tonnage and route (OUPV or Master License as required)Current First Aid, CPR, and AED certificationStrong knowledge of maritime navigation, safety procedures, and vessel systemsDemonstrated experience operating vessels in coastal Alaska or similar marine environments preferredStrong leadership, communication, and decision-making skillsProfessional demeanor with a strong focus on guest serviceAbility to remain calm and exercise sound judgment under pressureClean driving record and ability to pass required background checks and drug screeningPreferred QualificationsExperience in marine tourism or excursion operationsKnowledge of Southeast Alaska wildlife and Tlingit cultureExperience supervising crew membersNative Preference
