Director of Safety & Compliance

We are searching for an energetic and upbeat individual to join our team as our Director of Safety & Compliance.
The Director of Safety & Compliance will be responsible for developing a safety-first culture across the company. The Director will lead the team of Safety Supervisors and Safety Support team members and make recommendations to Leadership related on safety initiatives. This position will work closely with the HR Manager and work comp insurance company representatives to identify injury trends and opportunities for improvement. This Director role will be the main point of contact for the American Trucking Association and all State Trucking Associations.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop, implement, and monitor a risk-based assessment of how safe the organization is at the present.
Identify where the organization wants and needs to go with safety & compliance.
Identify any leadership and behavioral gaps regarding safe working environments and safety initiatives, then make recommendations on how to best fill the gap.
Represent the organization at trucking association events, including the American Trucking Association.
Provide a comprehensive and accurate monthly report containing appropriate KPI’s to Leadership Team.
Provide leadership and coaching to Regional Supervisors and administrative support staff.
Develop safety leadership culture at all levels of the organization.
Involve the Executive Team of changes in directions and monitor the industry and insurance systems as a source of improvement for the company.
Is the main point of contact for all Hazardous Material concerns and issues.
Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations regarding transportation and workplace safety.
Monitor hours of service records for accuracy and compliance.
Oversee the Accident review process including coordination of reporting, investigation, documentation, and management of incidents and ensure timely rulings are sent out.
Oversight of Safety Supervisor’s responsibility to assure proper accountability is delivered for preventable accidents.
Provide accident and injury data for HVP scoring.
Develop materials for monthly safety topics that align with current KPI trends.
Be involved in the review of and recommend changes to Driver Training program content.
Oversight of Driver Trainer Requirements and ensure any necessary updates are made to the certification course.
Create the accident management and investigation protocol for all managers and work with the L&D Team to create training.
Create Safety Committee requirements, communicate expectations to all locations and monitor for compliance.
Build a safety review checklist to be used by the Safety Supervisors and Director when conducting onsite reviews at all locations.
Handle any escalated public complaints.
Support the organization's goals and objectives.
Travel as required.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Skills, Experience and Educational Requirements
A minimum of 5 years of experience in the LTL industry is required.
Is available at all hours, if needed, including the ability to travel with little to no notice.
Experience in a Supervisory role preferably in a Safety department is required.
Intermediate knowledge of Office software and standard industry routing and E-Log software is required.
Working knowledge of federal and state safety laws, particularly FMCSR, PHMSA & OSHA standards is required.
Experience with analysis and identification of risk trends, problems, and solutions.
Ability to smoothly change priorities with little notice.
Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely using appropriate mediums (for example, face-to-face, e-mail, and presentations), listen effectively, demonstrate understanding, and clarify meaning for others.
Strong public speaking skills is preferred.
Ability to analyze, define, diagnose, and resolve problems based on sound logic and rationale.
Ability to develop, coach, and mentor others including the ability to provide development experiences and network opportunities, advise, and teach to prepare others for effective job performance.
Ability to interact cooperatively and collaboratively with others as a team, including those holding opposing views and goals.
Strong understanding of and ability to apply meaningful safety performance metrics.
Ability to plan and execute events, safety meetings, accident review meetings, and safety celebrations.
Develop and communicate informative presentations and strategies for stakeholders and managers to gain understanding and consensus.
Possess extensive knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 regulations Education and Experience
Bachelor’s Degree Logistics, Transportation, Supply Chain, Safety Management, or related fields is desirable.
Board certification as a Safety Professional is preferred.
Basic English language proficiency (reading, writing and verbal) is required.
