DescriptionPOSITION INFORMATIONThere are currently three (3) vacancies which may be filled as a result of this recruitment process. The eligibility list may be used to fill additional vacancies that occur within the term of the list. Positions in this class are normally three (3) - five (5) work hours per day, five (5) days per week, and ten (10) months per year. New employees are normally compensated at the first step of the salary schedule listed above.GENERAL PURPOSE Under general supervision, interviews and administers various individual student placement and diagnostic tests, including language and academic proficiency, vocational interest, aptitude, psychological tests and other assessment tools and instruments; scores and maintains related records; and performs related duties as assigned.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS Student Assessment Assistant is responsible for interviewing and testing students entering the District in various diagnostic areas, including aptitude, language and academic proficiency, psychological health and well-being and vocational interest. Incumbents administer and score various placement and diagnostic tests according to District guidelines and established procedures, determine appropriate class level and placement and maintain records of test scores and student data and information. Incumbents are also responsible for re-testing students for transition and re-designation according to established guidelines. Student Assessment Assistant is distinguished from Instructional Assistant – Speech-Language in that incumbents in the latter class specialize in conducting speech therapy sessions for students with learning or language disabilities.DutiesEssential Duties And ResponsibilitiesThe duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed. Interviews and administers diagnostic and placement tests to students in various diagnostic areas, such as language and academic proficiency, psychological health, aptitude and vocational interest for the purpose of classroom and grade placement according to established test procedures; prepares files for new students and fills out necessary testing forms; makes testing appointments for students; files and organizes student folders; inputs new enrollments and their test scores and language classifications in the District’s CAST system; reviews paperwork filled out by other interviewers to ensure it is properly filled out and signed; travels to various school sites to administer testing and assists psychologists, speech-language therapists and other specialists with test administration as assigned. Administers initial, transition and re-designation diagnostic and placement testing to determine student academic and language ability and proficiency and aptitude according to established guidelines; translates and explains testing procedures to students; scores tests and explains and interprets test scores for students; may administer testing for incoming students at other school sites; reviews home language surveys and student cumulative records to identify potential LEP students. 3. Scores tests and recommends appropriate class placement according to predetermined placement levels; informs teachers, students and parents of a student’s academic and language ability, aptitude, classification and classroom placement; prepares and distributes notification letters and letters regarding academic classifications; translates and interprets test scores for non-English speaking parents and students. Maintains records and logs of various testing and program related data, including new enrollments, current test scores, numbers of students currently enrolled in the program, hours of student attendance and students needing extensions; updates student information and scores; fills out status change forms for participants who have left or completed the program; assists in gathering and compiling information and data for various reports. Performs administrative and clerical support duties for case workers, Bilingual Facilitators and teachers as needed; sends and receives faxes; laminates materials; duplicates audio tapes for teachers; answers questions regarding testing and placement for case workers, teachers, parents and students.Other Duties Attends in-services and meetings regarding assessment techniques and instruments. Attends meetings and conferences to assist with translation for students and parents.QualificationsKNOWLEDGE OF: Basic test administration practices, procedures and guidelines. Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. Administrative practices and procedures, including record keeping and filing practices and procedures. Operation of standard business software.Ability To Administer assessment and diagnostic tests to individual students according to established guidelines. Organize, set priorities and exercise sound judgment within areas of responsibility. 3. Organize and maintain confidential student records and files. Communicate clearly and effectively, orally and in writing, in English and a designated second language. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Use tact, discretion, courtesy and patience in dealing with sensitive and difficult students and situations and individuals. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with District staff, specialists, teachers, parents, case workers, students and others encountered in the course of work.Examination InformationMinimum Qualifications Training And ExperienceA typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent; and at least one year of progressively responsible experience administering testing to students; or some combination of education, training and experience that produces the requisite knowledge and ability.LICENSES; CERTIFICATES; SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: A valid state driver’s license and the ability to maintain insurability under the District’s insurance policy.
