Computer Scientist (Ph.D.)
Overview
In this role you will join Exponent’s Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Practice in Menlo Park to tackle urgent, high-profile client challenges. You will work within a multidisciplinary team to analyze complex software and hardware problems and shape consulting offerings. You’ll conduct technical testing, perform analyses, and clearly communicate results to technical and business audiences. You can define and grow your own consulting practice by leveraging Exponent’s broad network and resources. This position offers a path to impact clients across patent litigation, automotive failure analysis, and consumer electronics while advancing your career through mentorship and collaboration.

ResponsibilitiesPerform technical analysis of software and hardware through code review, testing, or reverse engineeringAnalyze and consult on diverse electrical/electronic systems and componentsConduct electronic and computer laboratory testingPrepare reports that explain results to technical and business audiencesIdentify projects to support as an independent consultantPrepare technical proposals, develop business opportunities, and manage projectsLead and execute projects requiring computer science and electrical engineering skillsDevelop business by bringing in consulting projects within the first yearLeverage existing network and Exponent’s breadth to generate new client opportunities
Key requirementsPh.D. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics or a related fieldExperience in software, operating systems, file systems, networking, embedded systems, electronicsProficiency in C and C++Experience in software development and collaborative programmingElectrical or electronics laboratory experienceStrong verbal and written communication, evidenced by publications or talksAbility to convey technical conclusions to diverse audiencesInterest in working with a broad range of devices and systems across hardware and softwareWillingness to learn multiple software frameworks, tools, and languagesAbility to support multiple group projects and market the practicestrong communicationclient-facing collaborationself-motivationlow-level programming in C/C++software development and debuggingoperating systems
