JOB SUMMARY:
Assists plant pathologist with laboratory, greenhouse, and field research by growing plants and culturing plant-pathogenic microorganisms. Sets up and maintains experiments and collects data. Acts as laboratory manager. Performs other duties as assigned.
JOB DUTIES:
45% - Essential - Establishes and maintains small plot field experiments on vegetables and other crops. Collects environmental data and crop yields. Scouts plants for unwanted pests and manages them.
20% - Essential - Acts as lab manager to schedule workflow, order all supplies, process receipts, and record detailed procedures of experiments. Supervises time-limited employee and summer interns.
15% - Essential - Establishes and maintains greenhouse and growth chamber experiments on vegetables and other crops. Collects environmental data and other data as required. Scouts plants for unwanted pests and manages them.
15% - Essential - Maintains a stock collection of preserved microbiological cultures with detailed records. Assists plant pathologist with plant disease diagnosis. Identifies unknown pathogens using PCR techniques.
5% - Essential - Monitors and corrects safety practices of employees under their direct supervision. Assists with safety program of CREC as directed by the Resident Director.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Bachelor's Degree - animal husbandry, agriculture or a related field and work experience that is directly related to the area of employment. Work experience that is directly related to the area of employment may be substituted for the bachelor's degree on a year-for-year basis.
Work Experience - 1+ years with plants
PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS:
Education - Master's Degree - Plant Science, Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Biological Science, or Agronomy
Licenses - Drivers License Class D normal < 26,000
Work Experience - 2+ years ability to extract DNA and perform PCR; ability to set up field plots with plastic mulch and drip irrigation

COMPENSATION INFORMATION
Anticipated Salary: $52,100
Salary is dependent upon several factors including, but not limited to, a candidate's previous experience, knowledge, skills and performance in accordance with Clemson's compensation guidelines.
ESSENTIAL PERSONNEL LEVEL
Normal Operations
Required to follow emergency facility closure directives, and not normally expected work on-site during emergency situations.
