Staff Software Engineer Staff Software Engineer (Backend / Platform) Location: San Francisco (in the city) or Los Angeles, CA (3 days onsite) We're working with a growth-stage healthcare AI company building a real-time platform that helps detect patient deterioration early - already supporting 40,000+ patients daily. This is a high-impact, platform-level role focused on scaling backend systems, infrastructure, and integrations that power real-world clinical workflows. What You'll Do Architect and scale core backend systems for real-time data ingestion, processing, and application services Build and harden integrations with external systems (APIs, third-party platforms, enterprise tools) Design high-throughput, low-latency distributed systems with strong reliability guarantees Own cloud infrastructure and backend services across AWS (or GCP) Improve observability (metrics, logging, tracing) and drive reliability across production systems Define backend architecture patterns, engineering standards, and best practices Improve deployment velocity through CI/CD and infrastructure improvements Work within a regulated environment with a focus on security and data protection Mentor engineers and contribute to technical direction across teams What You'll Need 8+ years of backend or platform engineering experience Strong experience building distributed systems at scale Proficiency in Python or Node/TypeScript Experience designing APIs and event-driven systems Experience with AWS (or similar cloud environments) Experience with Docker and Kubernetes Strong understanding of system reliability and observability Experience working in high-growth production environments Nice to Have Experience with healthcare or other regulated systems Experience with streaming or real-time data systems Experience supporting data or ML platforms Why This Role Own critical backend systems at the core of the platform Work on real-time, high-scale infrastructure problems Join a small, high-bar team with strong ownership Help build out a growing engineering presence in San Francisco Benefits 100% company-paid medical, dental, and vision 401(k) with company match Bonus and equity Generous PTO Professional development budget Company-paid annual retreat For this position, you must be currently authorized to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship for a non-immigrant visa.
