One must be a student. The position will work up to 20 - 29 hours per week.Join the Monterey One Water Team!The Engineering Intern works under the direct supervision of the Engineering Manager or Associate Engineer and is responsible for performing a variety of tasks related to Engineering, document storage, and CAD functions of the Engineering Department.Essential FunctionsAssists professional staff by filing and scanning plans, specifications, and other engineering documents.Assists with project development and management of change process for Capital Improvement Projects and process efficiency measures.Prepares reports and recommendations relative to assigned areas of responsibility.Assists staff with various design and construction project tasks including researching and contacting vendors for information, reviewing submittals, performing calculations, etc.QualificationsKnowledge of:Engineering methods and procedures.Proper safety precautions working in an industrial environment.Use and capabilities of computers, automated equipment and standard applications software. Ability to learn new software applications.English usage, grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation.Principles, practices and methods of civil engineering as applied to the planning, design, construction, operations and maintenance of water, wastewater and recycled water systems.Basic principles of chemistry, biology and microbiology.Principles and practices of hydraulics including those of water flowing in pipelines and open channels and operating characteristics of pumping equipment.Mathematical principles including calculus, geometry, algebra, trigonometry, statistics, and math analysis.Surveying principles and practices.Techniques for providing a high level of customer service to public and Agency staff, in person and over the telephone.Ability to:Assist with design and planning using a variety of techniques.Understand, explain and apply applicable laws, codes, regulations and standards.Read and interpret plans and specifications.Conduct engineering research work and solve engineering problems utilizing a variety of engineering techniques.Assist in the preparation of clear, concise, and comprehensive engineering reports, recommendations, correspondence, policies, procedures, and other written materials.Analyze data and information using established criteria in order to determine consequences and to identify and select alternatives.Maintain attention to detail and accuracy.Operate office equipment including computer equipment and specialized software applications programs.Use English effectively to communicate in person, over the telephone, and in writing.Use tact, initiative, prudence, and independent judgment within general policy and legal guidelines.Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.Education and Experience:Any combination of experience and education/training that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade. Some experience working in an internship environment, i.e. engineering, CAD, or a closely related field will be a plus. The ideal candidate will have experience or knowledge of using CAD software, have experience using Word, Excel and Access database software, and will have effective oral and written communication skills as well as the ability to maintain a high level of accuracy and detail.License or Certificate:Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Driver's license and be insurable with the Agency's insurance at the standard rate and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment for this position.Physical and Environmental DemandsPhysical DemandsStanding & Walking - Standing for extended periods of time and/or walking distances (1 or more miles): 30 min up to 8 hrs per day.Lifting - Ability to safely lift 60 pounds to waist level: this requirement includes bending at knees to facilitate proper lifting techniques: 1 min up to 15 min per day.Manual Dexterity - The ability to perform multiple work activities requiring a significant level of physical and mental coordination, such as accurate measuring, repair and calibration of instruments, computer keyboard: 1 hr up to 8 hrs per day. Must be able to use hands to hold, shake, twist laboratory equipment during analysis; distinguish visually color, shape, size, and number; and distinguish visually measurements as small as millimeter and a milliliter.Visual - Acuity for reading literature and computer screens and ability to detect subtle color changes which are encountered in routine chemical analyses: 30 min up to 8 hrs per day.Reflexes - Ability to quickly and automatically respond to emergency and safety situations: 1 min up to 2 hrs per day.Environmental ElementsEmployees work in an office environment with moderate noise levels, controlled temperature conditions and no direct exposure to hazardous physical substances. Some supervised field work will be included at the Regional Treatment Plant.
