BESS Project Engineer

Role summary / purposeResponsible for performing engineering assignments ranging from limited scope and complexity to advanced engineering projects requiring expertise in multiple disciplines. Works under varying levels of supervision depending on experience, with increasing independence at higher levels. Assist with project management, negotiations, performance tracking and reporting. Responsibilities may include planning, organizing, and managing engineering projects, ensuring regulatory compliance, and leading technical teams. Engages in decision-making, technical analysis, project coordination, and engineering oversight, with a focus on utility-scale solar, BESS, and power plant operations. Can also work as an extension of the engineering team, ensuring designs meet project specifications, safety standards, and long-term performance and reliability goals.Key responsibilitiesProvides high-level oversight of engineering and project executionNegotiates technical and regulatory requirements and influences executive-level project decisionsLeads multi-disciplinary engineering teamsEnsures compliance with industry standards and optimizes technical designs for energy infrastructureActs as the technical authority on engineering standards, practices, and regulatory requirementsProvides high-level expertise in system design, grid optimization, and technical risk managementWorks closely with customer leadership to guide engineering strategies, solve complex challenges, and ensure long-term infrastructure resiliencePerforms specialized engineering functions in electrical/I&C, mechanical, civil/structural, and MOV valve engineering as requiredRequirements - education & experienceBachelor of Science in Engineering required15+ years of experience planning, designing, and executing large-scale energy projects, including solar, BESS, wind, and hydrogen systemsRequired skillsAdvanced experience in system integration and risk managementExpertise in utility-scale solar, BESS, and power plant operationsTechnical proficiency in electrical/I&C engineering (electric distribution systems, power systems, ladder logic, safe shutdown analysis, computational tools such as ETAP and EDISON)Mechanical engineering knowledge (pumps, valves, heat exchangers, pipe stress analysis, ASME standards)Civil/structural engineering capabilities (foundations, site grading, drainage systems, seismic qualification, pipe supports, welding, rigging)MOV valve engineering diagnostics and troubleshootingProject management and technical oversightNice-to-have / preferred skillsProfessional Engineering (PE) certificationImpellam Group and its brands are equal-opportunity employers committed to diversity and inclusion.
