This role combines modern UI/UX design and front-end development with emerging Generative AI technologies, including Azure OpenAI, Large Language Models (LLMs), and intelligent automation tools.This role will support an NIH client focused on building AI-driven applications that enhance internal business processes and improve user engagement. The developer will design and implement user interfaces for AI applications such as chatbots, knowledge retrieval tools, and workflow automation platforms, ensuring a seamless and efficient user experience.The successful candidate will collaborate with product owners, developers, and stakeholders to translate complex AI capabilities into intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly interfaces. The role involves building modern front-end applications using React (or similar frameworks), designing user journeys, and integrating AI-powered backend services into responsive UI experiences.This position offers an opportunity to contribute to cutting-edge AI modernization initiatives at NIH, improving usability, accessibility, and adoption of Generative AI tools across federal programs.Key ResponsibilitiesUI/UX Design and User ExperienceDesign user-centered interfaces for AI-powered applications, ensuring intuitive workflows and seamless user interactionsDevelop wireframes, prototypes, and high-fidelity UI designs for web-based applicationsConduct user research, usability testing, and iterative design improvements based on feedbackTranslate complex AI functionality (LLMs, chatbots, automation tools) into simple, accessible user experiencesEnsure compliance with federal accessibility standards (e.g., Section 508) and usability best practicesCollaborate with stakeholders to define user journeys, personas, and interaction modelsFront-End DevelopmentDevelop responsive, modern web applications using React, JavaScript/TypeScript, HTML, and CSSBuild reusable UI components and design systems to support scalable application developmentIntegrate front-end interfaces with backend AI services via RESTful APIsOptimize application performance, responsiveness, and cross-browser compatibilityCollaborate with backend developers to ensure seamless integration of UI with AI-driven servicesAI-Driven Application IntegrationDesign and enhance user interfaces for AI-powered tools such as chatbots, knowledge assistants, and automation platformsIntegrate LLM-based features (e.g., conversational interfaces, summarization tools, search experiences) into front-end applicationsSupport development of user experiences for Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) workflows and semantic search systemsWork with AI engineers to improve usability, explainability, and trust in AI-generated outputsContribute to enhancing the client AI Chat Tool with improved UX, accessibility, and interaction designCollaboration and Agile DevelopmentWork closely with product owners, developers, AI engineers, and stakeholders to deliver user-focused solutionsParticipate in Agile ceremonies including sprint planning, stand-ups, and retrospectivesTranslate business requirements into design and technical implementation plansSupport rapid prototyping and iterative development of AI-enabled user experiencesTesting, Documentation, and TrainingConduct usability testing and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) activitiesDevelop and maintain UI/UX documentation, including design systems and style guidesCreate user guides, training materials, and visual documentation for applicationsSupport knowledge transfer and training sessions for end users and stakeholdersQualificationsEducationBachelor's degree from an accredited institution in related fields (Computer Science, Human-Computer Interaction, UX Design, Information Technology, Data Science, or similar)ExperienceRequired:Minimum 5 years of experience in UI/UX design and front-end developmentExperience designing and developing responsive web applications using React (or similar frameworks)Experience creating wireframes, prototypes, and user interface designs using tools such as Figma, Adobe XD, or SketchExperience integrating front-end applications with APIs and backend servicesExposure to AI/ML or Generative AI technologies (LLMs, chatbots, or automation tools)Strong understanding of user-centered design principles and usability best practicesExperience working with HTML, CSS, JavaScript/TypeScriptExperience using GitHub for version control and collaborative developmentPreferred:Experience designing UI for AI-powered applications (chatbots, AI assistants, or search tools)Experience working with Azure OpenAI, LLMs, or AI-driven platformsExperience supporting federal IT environments (NIH or HHS preferred)Experience implementing Section 508 accessibility standardsExperience with design systems and component librariesFamiliarity with RAG pipelines and AI-driven search interfacesCertifications (Preferred)Certified UX Professional (UX Certification)Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900)Microsoft Azure AI Fundamentals (AI-900)Front-End or UI/UX certifications (Google UX, etc.)Required Skills and CompetenciesStrong user-centered design mindset and attention to detailAbility to simplify complex AI-driven functionality into intuitive user experiencesStrong problem-solving and analytical thinking skillsExcellent communication and collaboration abilitiesAbility to work in a fast-paced, Agile development environmentSelf-motivated, proactive, and highly organizedCompensation and BenefitsThe projected compensation range for this position is $90,000 to $140,000 per year benchmarked in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels.
