Controller
*Build the financial engine of a fast-growing home services company.*
We started out installing residential standby generators in Rochester. Today we install across New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida, and our volume grows every month.
We're now at the stage where our financial infrastructure needs to match the size of the business — and that's what this role is for.
We've made the decision to invest seriously in job costing, inventory control, and financial reporting, and we're hiring a Controller to lead that build and then own it. We run on ServiceTitan and the tools are there. We want someone who knows how to turn them into a system that gives us true margin visibility on every installation.
Rochester is our operational hub — all back-office functions run from here. You'll sit at the center of it, reporting directly to the owner, with financial responsibility across every market we serve.
If you've been waiting for a seat where you build the system instead of maintaining someone else's, this is that seat.
*WHAT YOU'LL DO*
_Early priorities_
* Stand up job costing in ServiceTitan — labor, materials, equipment, subcontractors, and permits costed to the individual installation
* Design the cost structure and job types that make that data usable
* Deliver gross margin visibility by job, by crew, and by market
_Building the function_
* Implement inventory management and truck stock par levels with replenishment logic
* Build purchasing controls around materials ordering
* Strengthen how manufacturer warranty credits are recognized and reported
* Establish a disciplined accounts payable cadence and a rolling cash forecast
_Ongoing ownership_
* Own month-end close and hit the deadline every month
* Own AP, AR, collections, payroll, and the bookkeeper who reports to you
* Manage multi-state compliance across New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida — sales tax treatment on installations, exemption certificates, payroll registrations, and workers' compensation
* Deliver a monthly financial package the owner makes decisions from: P&L by department and market, job costing detail, and cash position
* Partner with production and sales leadership on the numbers that drive their behavior
*WHAT YOU NEED*
_Required_
* Prior experience as a Controller, Assistant Controller, or Accounting Manager
* Job costing experience in construction, trades, or field services — residential or commercial contracting, HVAC, electrical, plumbing, roofing, or solar. You have costed individual jobs, not product lines or cost centers.
* Full-cycle accounting ownership including month-end close
* A track record of implementing something — a system, a module, a process — not just operating what someone else built
* Willingness to be hands-on. This is a small finance team and you will be in the detail.
_Preferred_
* ServiceTitan, or comparable field service software (BuildOps, Housecall Pro, Jobber, Service Fusion)
* Multi-state payroll, sales tax, and registrations
* Inventory and truck stock management in a fleet-based business
* Experience at a company that scaled through rapid multi-state growth
_Not required:_ CPA. We care about what you've built.
_A note for candidates from a manufacturing background:_ standard costing, BOMs, and plant variance analysis are a different discipline from job costing a field installation. If that's your experience, tell us specifically how it transfers rather than assuming it does.
*WHY THIS SEAT IS WORTH TAKING*
* *Direct line to ownership.* No layers. You'll be in the room where decisions get made.
* *Real authority.* You own the finance function and the systems decisions that come with it, from day one.
* *You'll see your work in the numbers.* The job costing and inventory work you lead is the primary lever on our profitability. Most controllers never get to point at a margin improvement and say they caused it.
* *Growth you can ride.* Multiple states, expanding markets, and an owner building something substantially larger than what exists today. The person who builds our financial infrastructure now is positioned to lead it as we scale.
We're a growth-stage company and we run lean and disciplined with capital. You'll be solving real constraints, not theoretical ones — which is what makes the work interesting.
