Project Engineer – Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
Leap29 are seeking a technically strong Project Engineer to support the delivery of utility scale BESS projects across Texas.
This role sits on the Owner/IPP side and is ideal for an engineer who enjoys owning technical execution from concept through commissioning, working cross‑functionally, and influencing high‑value project decisions. Our client is a well‑established renewable energy developer with a growing BESS portfolio. This position offers exposure to multiple large‑scale projects and close collaboration with senior leadership.
This role reports into the Senior Manager of Project Engineering.
Responsibilities
Lead engineering activities from conceptual design through operational readiness for utility‑scale BESS projects
Own the technical delivery across multiple projects, ensuring schedule, quality, and compliance objectives are met
Perform proactive risk identification, mitigation planning, and value engineering throughout design and construction
Technical Integration & Oversight
Manage EMS, controls architecture, SCADA systems, and electrical & mechanical design integration
Review and approve system designs, performance models, interconnection documentation, and vendor submittals
Ensure alignment with ERCOT interconnection and metering requirements
Commissioning & Operations Transition
Coordinate commissioning and performance validation with EPCs, OEMs, and EMS vendors
Lead the technical transition from commissioning through handover to operations
Capture lessons learned and support continuous improvement across project execution
Cross‑Functional & Commercial Support
Act as the technical liaison between engineering, finance, operations, and commercial teams
Support contract reviews, procurement decisions, and technical negotiations
Understand the impact of technical decisions on project economics and pro‑forma returns
What You Bring
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or similar (Master’s preferred)
3+ years’ experience in engineering roles, including 1+ year on utility‑scale BESS projects in Texas
Strong foundation in power systems, EMS, SCADA, and controls
Familiarity with ERCOT interconnection protocols and utility requirements
Experience with engineering tools such as AutoCAD, ETAP, or equivalent
Ability to confidently interpret, validate, and challenge detailed engineering documentation
Strong communication skills and the confidence to present technical solutions to senior stakeholders
