Network & Security Engineer

Salary: $90,000 - 135,000 per year Requirements We need 3+ years of hands-on experience supporting enterprise or SMB network infrastructure, including firewalls, switching, wireless, and VPNs. We require proven production experience configuring and troubleshooting Palo Alto Networks firewalls. We look for CompTIA Network+ or an equivalent credential such as CCNA or JNCIA. We need a solid working knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and standard troubleshooting utilities such as Wireshark, traceroute, and packet captures. We value familiarity with macOS support, Google Workspace administration, and core MFA/SSO concepts. We need strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical matters clearly to non-technical audiences. We require a valid drivers license, dependable transportation, and the ability to travel within the DC metro area. We require U.S. citizenship for compliance reasons. Palo Alto Networks certifications such as PCNSA or PCNSE are strongly preferred. We prefer 5+ years of progressive networking and IT operations experience. Additional certifications such as Security+, CCNA/CCNP, or Google Workspace/Microsoft 365 administrator credentials are a plus. Prior MSP, MSSP, or IT consulting experience supporting multiple clients at once is highly desirable. Experience with JAMF, Intune, or similar MDM platforms, along with EDR/XDR tools, is beneficial. Exposure to compliance frameworks such as CMMC, NIST 800-171, or SOC 2 is valuable. Hands-on experience implementing perimeter security, VPN, zero-trust access, and centralized logging in client environments is preferred. Prior military, federal, or contractor experience in IT, communications, or cyber operations is advantageous. We are looking for a diagnostic mindset, calm composure under pressure, discretion, ownership, strong initiative, adaptability, and collaborative teamwork. Responsibilities We plan, configure, and deploy Palo Alto Networks NGFW appliances at client locations, including provisioning, licensing, and Panorama integration where needed. We design and implement firewall rules, NAT, App-ID/User-ID policies, URL filtering, GlobalProtect VPN, and SSL decryption based on client needs. We configure and troubleshoot LAN and WLAN environments, including VLAN segmentation, routing, switching, and wireless access points. We handle on-site troubleshooting for connectivity, networking, and performance issues, resolving incidents in real time during client visits. We document client environments thoroughly, including topology diagrams, IP plans, and change records, and keep documentation current after each engagement. We provide first- and second-line IT support to our internal team across Windows, macOS, and mobile devices. We administer Google Workspace, identity and access services, MFA enrollment, mailbox and group settings, and shared drive permissions. We support internal voice, video, chat, and conferencing tools to keep daily communications running smoothly. We manage endpoint tooling through JAMF, Intune, or equivalent MDM platforms, including imaging, hardening, and patch compliance tasks. We maintain our internal network, VPN, and firewall security posture to the same standard we deliver to clients. We travel regularly to client sites for installations, audits, and incident response. We communicate professionally with non-technical stakeholders before, during, and after field work, and we produce concise written summaries of each engagement. We carry and maintain a field kit and stay ready for short-notice dispatch. We uphold discretion and professionalism when working in client homes, offices, and family office settings.
