As a key contributor to the smooth delivery of patientcare, the Unit Secretary effectively manages communication across multiple channels, facilitates patientmovement—including admissions, transfers, and discharges—and maintains accurate paper andelectronic medical records (EMR). Serving as a liaison among all members of the healthcare team,including patients and members of their support systems, the Unit Secretary ensures timely, respectful,and professional communication in person, electronically, and by phone. The Unit Secretary facilitatescontinuity of care through paper and EMR navigation, scheduling appointments, preparing forms anddocumentation, ordering supplies, managing mail, and supporting overall unit organization andworkflow. In alignment with High Reliability Organization (HRO) principles, the Unit Secretarydemonstrates mindfulness, attention to detail, and a commitment to safety and reliability in all tasks.The Unit Secretary performs within the defined scope of the role and carries out non-clinical dutiesdelegated by the Registered Staff Nurse, supporting the care team with a strong commitment todelivering compassionate, patient-centered care. This individual must display professionalism, empathy,and strong interpersonal skills, particularly during periods of high activity or stress. The ability to remaincalm, organized, and respectful in a fast-paced environment is essential. As one of the first points ofcontact on the unit, the Unit Secretary upholds a high standard of customer service, confidentiality, andteamwork.
